The Controversy Of Lowering The Voting Age
Personally, I believe the Voting age should stay at 18 years old. Today's teenagers aren't well informed on politics and most young adults don't even bother to show up on election day. Lowering the age could have a negative effect on both our percentage of participation and the quality of elected canidates. I believe there are better ways of increasing voter turnout. In Belgium it's a requirement by law to vote and their voter turnout is a whopping 93%! If we implemented this in the U.S. it might encourage young people to stay informed and elect better canidates. Most young people believe voting is a joke saying, "Two sides of the same cruddy coin, so why vote for either?" or "Electoral Colleges make our votes insignificant,

Mandatory voting has a possibility of leading to random votes because many citizens are either uneducated about politics or they are apolitical, meaning that they don’t care about politics. If there was mandatory voting then people would have to vote even though they don’t want to. In todays world, about 48% of people vote. Most of those voters are around the age of 60. I find it sad that young adults aren't very excited about being able to exercise their civic right. In his book, An Economic Theory of Democracy, Anthony Downs writes about the pros and cons of voting. The pros simply being that if you canadite wins then they get to put into action all the plans he/she had which compeled you to vote for them. The cons being that we would have to resaruch the canadates to see which one believes the same thing you believe, we would have to drive to the place were you vote, if it is raining or cold outside you would have to bundal up. So the reason americans don't vote is simply because we are lazy.…

In 1948 only 51% of eligible voters participated in the elections and in 2012 it only increased a mere 11% more to 62%. I believe that the problem is that the United States government hasnt done a great job in encouraging people to be a part of making a decision that'll greatly affect their future and they havent expressed the importance of voting to the entire population. So with this people dont feel that their vote is needed and that it wont make an impact on who ends up winning the election. The results is people dont turn up to the elections and the voting percentage of people goes…

Voting is also not an easy task. It takes a lot of effort and research to distinguish which Member of Parliament would be the best to vote for. Some representatives may even come door to door to persuade you to vote or them and since they would be aware that young teens now have a say in elections, they would use their sneaky minds and somehow promise something attractive to youths, possibly a four day school week or three months summer of summer break as opposed to two. Surveys have shown that teens are much more gullible then adults and this could also cause a problem within a group of friends. e.g.(Hey man! Who are you voting for? Umm… The Reforms. So, what makes us think sixteen year olds will take responsibility and make a change?…
