The Concept of Work Culture
One of the participants asked: "I am a senior manager of Materials Department and I joined an organization 25 years ago as an Engineer Trainee and over the last 25 years I have gone through every experience in the organization. During the initial part of my career, the job was very challenging and interesting.

Now, all those exciting days are gone since I do not find my joy any more interesting because there is nothing new in my job. I am now feeling bored because I am doing a routine job.

However, Sir, I am living in the same house for over 40 years, I am the son for the same parents for over 45 years, I am the father for the same children for the past 10 years and the husband for the same lady for the past 20 years. In these personal roles I do not feel bored. Please enlighten me why I am bored of the routine in the office and not in the house?"

The Scholar responded: "Please tell me for whom does your mother cook?"

The executive replied that obviously the mother cooks for others.

Then the Scholar said that the mother "Serves" others and because of this service mindedness, she is not feeling tired or bored. But in an office, we "Work" and not "Serve". Anything we consider, as service will not make us feel bored. That is difference between Serving and Working.

He asked the executive to consider his work as service and not merely a work!! He emphasised that attitude matters. If you think you are working for the organization you will get frustrated. If you feel you are doing a service and getting some service charges you will feel happy. After all, doing what you like is freedom but liking what you do is happiness! It is just a paradigm shift that is required!

    I currently am employed with the U.S. Coast Guard as a federal employee for the Surface Forces Logistics Center under the Medium Endurance Cutter Product Line (MECPL). The Surface Forces Logistics Center (SFLC) is the main unit for which I work for and they represent the dominant culture because the SFLC is the hub of the Coast Guard. Our overall mission is to provide the surface fleet and other assigned assets with depot level maintenance, engineering, supply, logistics, and information services to support Coast Guard missions. The chain of command that falls under the SFLC are its subcultures and it works its way down the line from the highest ranking military members to its lowest ranking. Civilians or federal employees are also a part of this chain of command and the level of importance goes by the pay scale or pay grade. Along with higher pay comes more responsibility and the higher ranking individuals usually absorb any punishment for the people for which they represent if that unit or section doesn’t do something right or in time. This was a culture difference to me when I first entered active duty military back in 2002. I wasn’t use to having anybody who was a higher ranking than me being able to tell me what to do. It felt like I was being bossed around and I felt that some individuals took advantage of this. Once I was in active duty status for a few years I quickly realized that they were only doing it because they were tasked from a higher ranking individual than them to get something done and their plate was already full and lacked time to get the tasking accomplished in time.…

    This report provides a descriptive analysis of the organizational structure and culture that exists at the Training and Productivity Authority of Fiji (TPAF). It goes further on to analyze leadership and communications as two problematic behavioral aspects at TPAF that could be addressed to improve organizational performance and concludes by detailing recommendations that can be undertaken to bring about these improvements. Information for the report was gathered from the organization’s website and published reports, personal observation and reference materials available through the USC online library. The report establishes that TPAF’s organization structure is what is typically referred to as a bureaucracy with functional departmentalization and high levels of standardization.
