The Computers Will Soon Replace The Book
The Computers will soon replace the Book

The feeling of rough paper on your fingertips, the familiar smell of a book fresh out of print… Would you really wish for these to become mere memories, lost and worthless? Would you want to go to a library where there were no books, only an electronic catalogue to browse through for electronic text? I know I would not appreciate such a world. Books are essential to the world. They have been around for centuries and have become widely appreciated and almost every living soul has owned a book. What would our world come to if the only book left in the world was that book sitting behind a glass wall in the local museum?

There have been many arguments about books using up world resources. E-books have been introduced that you can use to download online versions of text and novels. These do save trees from being cut down and reduce the usage of the Earth’s resources. However, as the world is growing even more aware of our diminishing resources, more ‘green’ methods and alternatives to reduce this loss are being introduced. In the United Kingdom, already, two of the top five publishers of books have introduced the new paper policies to use ‘Ancient Forest Friendly’ book papers, which are free of ancient forest fibers and contain one hundred percent recycled fiber. Six million books have already been printed in such a manner, and more will continue to do so, leaving little worry for our depleting resources.

As for E-books, it can be said that they are the better choice for books. They can store thousands of books and they allow you to purchase books as electronic text without ever having to go out to a bookstore to buy them. However, the downsides are plentiful. These E-books cost much more than a single book and this might prove inconvenient for those who only wish to purchase one or two nooks.

Books give the world knowledge. They tell the truths that are behind the myths and legends. Paper knowledge that shows the reality of the world, whether people want to know said realities or not. So what is it called when those books are taken away? It is called censorship. Plain, simple, and no way around it. The book Fahrenheit 451 gives perfect insight as to what life would be like with the lack of books. Ray Bradbury’s story not only shows life without books, but also critics the society of today and how books are lacking. Books are being taken away in Fahrenheit 451 because their government does not want its people to have the knowledge that the books provide. This same situation occurs in modern day societies, causing ignorance among…

It explains the future of books, the importance of libraries, and the responsibilities we have to create as a society that values ideas, imagination, and discovery. Gaiman believes that, “people who cannot understand each other cannot exchange ideas, cannot communicate” (1). This is true because literature, allows individuals to connect with larger truths and ideas within society. Without literature, there's a boundary that inflicts what there is to know and how to understand it. Also Gaiman relates to his belief in books by stating, “I do not believe that all books will or should migrate onto screens” (4). I agree with Gaiman because digital technology is changing the way in which library materials are preserved. This quote reminded me of when Borders decided to close. I had to make sure during the close-out sale that I grabbed everything I could because I was afraid that books were no longer going to be in use in the future. With technology continuously developing; there’s a high chance that society will no longer operate through artificial materials. I believe that if books are online, this affects the way in which individuals may understand it, or even perceive that information. There should be no reason why one cannot visit the library to gain and interpret their knowledge through a book. I believe that paper copies of books are a much better way to go…

In the article, Hari talks about how for years the paper book is constantly being challenged. Hari mentions the novel "Super Sad True Story" by Gary Steynghart. The novel goes on to worry that a higher technology will cause paperback books to be forgotten. Like Hari, most people are guilty of that huge collection of books they own and at one point ponder the thought - Am I ever going to read these? Hari argues that people feel e-books are simply more convenient and take up zero space. He states that the sales for the paper book decreased by nine per cent in 2011. It was the result of consumers having higher interest toward e-books and other technologies.…

College students face many challenges; they have to make sure their classwork is done well, and completed in a timely fashion. Many have to find a way to balance school and a career as well as making sure that family obligations and scholastic responsibilities are both met. With all that to deal with the last thing most students want to worry about is carrying around books. Thankfully modern technology has addressed this issue with the E-Reader. An E-Reader will allow people to carry all of the books in their school library as well as personal books and magazines, right in the palm of their hands. There are many types of E-Readers, but two companies lead the field. The first is Amazon with the Kindle. The second is Barnes and Noble with the Nook. Deciding between a Kindle and a Nook can be difficult, but factors like price, features, and specifications can help a person pick which would be best for them.…

Moreover, E-books can affect the reading habits of people and actually get them to read more. Some people today believe that E-books are going to allow access to so many features that the library will not be needed any longer (“E-books”). Experts believe that some day all reading will be done on some form of computer screen (“E-books”). With the emergence of these E-books, there is more of a chance than ever that printed books will soon fade away (“E-books”). People feel that since e-books can just download the books for a small price, libraries do not even have to shelve the printed books (“E-books”). Experts also believe that there are so many advantages from the E-book that there is no reason to even own printed books (“E-books”). Supporters of the E-book believe that if libraries would upload all their books and materials on the internet, people would benefit more and would easily be able to access all the materials with the E-book (“E-books”).…

As a young child, I was always aware of books and the difference between books for children and books for adults. I would not say that I grew up in a family of devout readers, but I did grow up in a family of individuals who appreciated the value of books. Although my parents never seemed to have time to simply sit and read frequently, my mother had engaged with college-level texts in her adulthood, and both of my parents saw the benefit of exposing my sister and me to books at an early age. There was always a bookshelf in my house packed full of textbooks and enormous tomes with dusty, creased spines. We also had a full set of the Encyclopedia Britannica (which I recently found out is going out of print). It would be an exaggeration to say that these books intrigued me because they represented knowledge. However, they intrigued me because although they sat there and collected dust for years, my mother refused to throw them away. It was impressed upon me very early on that books were important, and that throwing them away was wrong. I did not get it completely at that point, especially because those books were incomprehensible to a four or five year old, but I understood that it was something that would be important when I was older.…

Introduction: Textbooks, they have always been a part of our lives, right? However, have you ever wondered why, when, and where did they actually come from? Books, in one form or another, have always existed whether on clay tablets, papyrus rolls, or on sheets of vellum. When Johann Gutenberg invented the printing press in 1448, it ushered in an era of mass-producing books. The Guinness Book of World Records lists the Gutenberg Bible as the world’s oldest mechanically printed book. The first copies of which were printed in 1454-1455. Only forty-eight original copies are known to existence, of which twenty-one are complete. Here is a photo of a preserved Gutenberg Bible located…

Books with crisp, flimsy, or wilted covers and pages have an almost magical element to them. I don’t always buy books straight from the store; I like to hunt them down at garage sales or the library. When I see the used condition of the book I appreciate that someone other than myself found this tale interesting and worthwhile. And sometimes in a used book I notice a small “happy birthday so-and-so, enjoy this book”, which makes me happy that a book I love has been passed around to so many people. With a Kindle for example the books being read are merely downloads and will vanish when you are done with them. There is no picking up the book from the bookshelf after years of neglect and reminiscing on your favorite parts. Also, when I read I like the fact that I can put my personal thoughts in the margin or draw hearts and underline my favorite quotes. So yes a Kindle possesses the text but lacks so many of the reasons people have grown to love…

We get information from reading books. Without them we wouldn’t get any information or learn new words. Without books we wouldn’t know what happened back then or read autobiographies of what was happening during Slavery, Holocaust, WWI, WWII, and many more historical events that occurred long ago. For example, when Montag went to Faber about books and Faber told him how books tell the truth about life and expressions from the writer,…
