Many books and their film adaptations mostly tell the same story and have many similarities. However, there always seems to be events or details that are changed to fit the film. From the way the characters develop, to what the symbols stand for, Alice Walker’s novel, “The Color Purple,” and Steven Spielberg’s make of the movie, “The Color Purple,” show signs of similarity and a few details that make them unique. First, the 295 page book about a girl growing up being abused and not having a say in how she wants to live her life, was published in 1982. Steven Spielberg then directed a movie to take after the book. Whoopi Goldberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Danny Glover starred in the movie that tells of struggles and success. Which soon followed Alice Walker’s novel, in 1985. The movie, produced by Peter Guber is a retelling of Celie’s journey through life and how she overcame battles. They way the characters develop, the setting, the way the plot progresses, and the symbols are all ways of comparing and contrasting these two tellings of “The Color Purple.”
