Shug writes Celie and tells her that she has a huge surprise for her, which happens to be a new husband, Grady. Celie is not fond of Grady because she feels like he just married to Shug for her money. Celie has not yet told her friend how she feels because she is afraid of hurting her feelings. Shug brings him over to celebrate Christmas with all of them. During Christmas, Grady and Mr. _____ drink while Celie and Shug spend some much needed time together. Shug tells Celie how her singing career is really taking off and she has met some very popular musicians. She then asks Celie how life is going with Mr. _____ and she informs her friend that it isn’t improving like she had said it would. She then breaks down and tells Shug everything about her life. She tells her about how she got raped as a child by her stepfather, her silence, her pregnancies, and the disappearance of her sister, Nettie, which broke her heart. After she finishes her stories, tears filled her eyes and she begins to cry and Shug cries with her and tells her that she loves her. It is good that Celie is finally able to open up to someone about the heartbreaks she has felt throughout her life. When difficult times arise, it is good to talk to someone about what is going on and that is exactly what Celie needs at the moment, to fell loved. Days have passed since the two girls had their heart to heart conversation and Shug asks Celie to tell her more about Nettie. Aside from Shug, her sister is the only friend she has ever had. She explains how she is afraid that Nettie is dead because she hasn’t received any letters from her. Shug has been seeing Mr.______ take letters from the mailbox and put them in his coat pocket. A few weeks later, Shug gets ahold of them and reads them. The letters are from Nettie saying that she is in Africa and all is well with her. In one of her letters that she has been writing her all along and that she assumes that Mr. ______ hasn’t given her
