The Clutter Character Analysis
Holcomb is the village that is being introduced by the reader, a little yet prosperous farming settlement in western Kansas. Herbert Clutter, a man and a well known member of the community, lives a suitable life as the owner and proprietor of River Valley Farm, where he lives with his wife who has mental problems, Bonnie, and children, Nancy sixteen, and Kenyon fifteen. Nancy, who is a Straight A student, and president of her class, a leader in the 4-H, and has recently played a major role in the school production of “Tom Sawyer.” Kenyon, more reticent than his sister, spends much of his time woodworking in the Clutters’ The Clutters’ peaceful and contented existence is marred only by the fact that Bonnie Clutter suffers from depression, a condition that leaves her bedridden on many days.

After repeated knockings, the Clutters did not answer the door, Nancy drove to town to ask Susan Kidwell if she knew anything about the Clutters. Susan said that she didn’t know anything about them so they both went back to the Clutters farm, entered the house, and found Nancy in her bedroom floor, dead from a shotgun blast to the head.
The sheriff police gets there and town officials as well uncover the rest of the family dead. Bonnie in her bedroom, also shot in the head, Mr. Clutter and Kenyon, in the basement of the house, the kenyon shot in the face shot Mr. Clutter's throat was slit.
No one from the town believed what had happened. Sue Kidwell and Bobby Rupp are both devastated by the loss of Nancy Sue friend and Bobby’s girlfriend. Beverly and Eveanna, the elder two daughters of Herb and Bonnie go to Holcomb. After, having arriving back in Olathe, Perry goes to a hotel room, meanwhile Dick returns to his parents’ house just in time for Sunday dinner and just in time to watch the afternoon basketball game on

    The townspeople’s reaction to the news of the killings is one of “amazement, shading into dismay; a shallow horror sensation that cold springs of personal fear swiftly deepened” (70). The Clutters’ demise has larger significance for this sheltered little part of western Kansas: it amounts to the infiltration of an “other” – a “poor, rootless, misbegotten” other – into their peaceable and prosperous little universe. The Clutter killings symbolize a collision of the two sides of America: the prosperous, self-assured “haves” with the disappointed and destitute “have-nots.” The ideology of the American dream is forced to confront those it has left behind. The town of Holcomb, following the initial trauma of the grim discovery, begins to confront the longer-term implications of the murders: “This hitherto peaceful congregation of neighbors and old friends had suddenly to endure the unique experience of distrusting each other” (88). That the town of Holcomb has experienced a loss of innocence is a point that Capote continues to explore in this section. Disillusioned by the crime, the residents are fraught with feelings of fear and mistrust, and many set off to settle elsewhere, hoping to regain their sense of security and well-being.…
