In previous decades the role of the teacher was a different one. Learning used to involve a teacher standing at the front of a classroom talking and expecting their students to soak up their knowledge like sponges. In today’s classroom, it is a recognised fact that all students need to learn in an environment of mutual respect…
Do you think people can control how or if the die; even if inevitable? This unique story by Francis Bret Harte "The Outcast of Poker Flat", has a grey western setting. Harte explores the mind of a gambler who is exiled from a warped town. Two literary devices regionalism and naturalism content is evident throughout, giving the story a feeling of hopelessness of survival.…
Many people will agree that everyone strives to be the very best that they can be physically, mentally, or even emotionally. This is due to society trying to have a perfect image of everyone and them living a perfect life in harmony and peace. This is like the older saying of “Living in a perfect world” is not all that it seems, it is not all sunshine and rainbow in everyone but some that is the best part of their personality and it can change over time in someone either for the greater good or just in a situation. This is shown tremendously in the short story The Outcasts of Poker Flat, written by one of the most famous local color writers, Bret Harte. This story was written in a time period of 1850’s where the great migration west was in…
Each of the speakers on the video described how they enjoy working with children and felt like they needed to make a contribution or difference in the world. Not only with the children but connecting with other teachers and the parents. Involving the families and making a difference in someone’s life drives the motivation to keep impacting lives. People who are passionate see new opportunities and challenges to perform on newer levels (Hagel, 2010).…
Children today are given everything and in return give nothing, this is bad for humanity to become a grow and remain prosperous. Children need experience and they need to be resilient to petty problems and learn how to fight actual problems. Children need to grow into healthy self-sustaining adults. Parents often time in present day America often give their children better opportunities in school and expect them to perform up to the level that the money that they spend should equate to. This way of parenting causes high amounts of stress for the student because they feel that if they aren’t getting A’s then they have failed at their job as a student (Source A).…
Everyone has their own perspective of what best way and how to learning children. The perspective of the student Jeff Bliss was tired and angry about the teacher going off on her student so he became the voice of his classmates. His stand up and speak out about the teacher Julie Phung lack of teaching her student by hand out packet and not give face to face communication about the work. The perspective of teacher Julie Phung was to tell Jeff Bliss to left her class because his was disruptive but she did not care. She mumbling, you are wasting my time!…
Children in America have the privilege of a free education. We have been gifted the gift of molding our own future with a teacher to guide us and help us learn throughout our years. Giving us this freedom, we are gaining much more than just knowledge. We are learning responsibility, social skills, and so much…
How has your understanding of teaching this subject and/or grade level changed after viewing this video?…
My grandparents and family talked to me about education. My dad told me a story about an elder who was very proud of his new toolbox filled with tools. Every day his children would ask to use the tools in his box and he said: "No, not today, I am saving these for a special occasion." As his children grew older they continued to ask for the tools but again he said: "these tools were being saved for the right occasion." Finally the children gave up asking for the tools. One day many years later, the grandfather thought that it was time to open the box of tools and use them. As he opened the box, with children and now grandchildren looking on, he saw that the tools were rusty. He picked up the wrench but it crumbled in his hands.…
Teaching, it’s an art unto itself. An art more common than not that is ill reputed by the “students” that need enlightenment. So much in fact, the country itself has been diminished in quality of education and information retainment its children in pre-secondary education. A fact that does hold true though, is the uncanny ability for a parent to teach a child (Father to Son), and for the child to cling to the gathered ideas for improvement though his or her life. I feel as if the somewhat cult followed book A River Runs Through It best shows this though its metaphorical implications involving the father teaching the two sons (Norman and Paul); not only does he teach the children how to cast a fly, read waters, and catch fish, he uses the time (in his life and on the Blackfoot) to teach them of God, life, and living, in contrast to the modern family, often fatherless. It truly represents something very ideal to us Americans, having a father who is idolized, fishin’ on the river with pa’, learnin’ more than just fishin’, but about life.…
When I had first volunteered at a preparatory school as a teacher’s assistant, I was thrilled and excited. I enjoyed working with children and I admit, was slightly disillusioned with expectations that the children would be dutiful and effortless to watch over. Unfortunately, all my prior imaginations crashed the second I entered the classroom. Everywhere I saw, it was pure chaos. I dodged a flying crayon as I saw children running around throwing paper airplanes, balls, while others just stared at their iPads, focused on the latest game. Not a single one of them even listened to me or glanced at me as I tried to yell over the loud chatter.…
As a result of this ability to think about childhood(s) in a new manner, I will approach my teaching practices as an educator by firstly understanding the expectations that society at that particular time has placed on children. I believe the attitudes that children will have towards education and learning will come from the society they live in. In order to encourage children to engage in the learning process it will be necessary to examine the values and beliefs of the society. ‘For one thing, the appraisal of children’s competence, no matter how great it actually is, is determined by ‘complex and varied social contexts within which children of different ages are facilitated or hindered in giving their consent’’(Lam, 2012, p. 157) (James and James, 2004, p.…
We cannot assume that just because a teacher teaches, a learner learns. The process is far more complex than one of received input and intended outcome. This is because teachers, when engaging with learners, are not involved in programming machines; the learning process involves humans who are diverse in their needs, development, attitudes, values and beliefs.…
Education is one of the most important aspects of any child’s life. One day I hope to be a positive and successful teacher, where children need and want to have me be a part of their learning and successes throughout their lives. Educational philosophy has changed over the decades, and still today, not everyone is in total and complete agreement on the subject. Nevertheless, one thing is certain: philosophy is the groundwork of learning styles. All children learn differently and no one philosophy is completely correct. Children are not a one size fit all it comes in a verity of style and beliefs. If we start to guile them by being a good role model, you will be giving the needed equity’s to the young people, by giving the need path to go down for success life.…
I believe that every child has a unique character in the diversity of learning towards growth and development. And I am certain that as a would-be teacher, there’s so much reward which I can derive from being able to impart knowledge to the growing child and share the attitudes that will govern him/her through life and I should pattern this to my teaching strategies. It is my aspiration to help children meet their fullest potential in developing their physical, intellectual, social, emotional, and spiritual aspects of life providing them a safe environment, productive stimulating atmosphere, and ideal interactions. My way of instruction must be suitable to the learning styles of my students.…
