THE CHARTERED ENGINEER STANDARD
Chartered Engineers are characterised by their ability to develop appropriate solutions to engineering problems, using new or existing technologies, through innovation, creativity and change. They might develop and apply new technologies, promote advanced designs and design methods, introduce new and more efficient production techniques, marketing and construction concepts, or pioneer new engineering services and management methods. Chartered Engineers are variously engaged in technical and commercial leadership and possess effective interpersonal skills.
Guidance – These are examples of activities which could demonstrate that you have achieved the CEng criteria.
Engage in formal post-graduate academic study. Learn and develop new engineering theories and techniques in the workplace.
Broaden your knowledge of engineering codes, standards and specifications.
Lead/manage market research, and product and process research and development.
Cross-disciplinary working involving complex projects.
Use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to optimise the application of existing and emerging technology.
A1 Maintain and extend a sound theoretical approach in enabling the introduction and exploitation of new and advancing technology and other relevant developments.
This could include an ability to:
• Identify the limits of own personal knowledge and skills
• Strive to extend own technological capability
• Broaden and deepen own knowledge base through research and experimentation.
A2 Engage in the creative and innovativedevelopment of engineering technology and continuous improvement systems.
This could include an ability to:
• Establish users’ needs
• Assess marketing needs and contribute to marketing strategies21

Creation and Innovation in Chemical Engineering

Creation and Innovation need to have a background and knowledge in a specific area. It leads to a benefit for the company by choosing the right raw material and thinking far for the future. The engineers in the companies use to have plans for every step. In the workplace, engineers should take aware of every process and operation. In some cases, engineers should take a quick decision so, they have to have a wide imagination of the whole process and how it work and the implication behind that decision .also Identifying the constraints and the exploit opportunities for the development and transfer of technology within own chosen field. Chemical engineers use their background of chemistry in an industrial setting, to create new substances and products and improve the quality and production process of existing ones. They are primarily interested in finding efficient, economical ways to turn raw materials into high-quality finished goods. This skill should be existed in every chemical engineer because companies always face technical problems. On the other hand the development plan should be prepared in advance. So, the engineer always has to have the whole picture of the upcoming steps. In order to develop this skill in the personality, the engineers should attend courses related on how to think and decide quickly when it needed. Also there are many books talking about the creation and innovation in engineering field. Train yourself by participating in some activities that are related to this field, and strengthen your innovative thinking. The most important initiative to improve innovation will be to provide future engineers with a multidisciplinary and broad skill set.
