The Characteristics of a Good Teacher
Write an essay about the characteristics of a good teacher.

I have always wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl so I usually read all the articles about how to become a good teacher. They always have a lot of differences but there are some things in common. Those things are the characteristics that a good teacher should have: knowledge, teaching skills, student management technique.
The most important thing for someone to be a teacher is knowledge. You can’t be a teacher if you don’t have enough knowledge. The lessons you teach in class are important. Besides that, you have to have a strong foundation of knowledge to answer the questions that students ask outside the classrooms.
A good teacher must have good teaching skills. Firstly, you have to be creative. Teaching must be more than simply opening a book, doing exercises and following an outline written by someone else. Students will be more attracted to the lessons if they play games, work in groups, sing songs,…Secondly, a good teacher gives challenges to their students. I want a teacher who can maintain a level of difficulty high enough to challenge me, but not so high as to discourage me. Thirdly, a good teacher will take a minute or two to answer a question after class or take five minutes to correct something that students have done on their own. Teachers need to encourage students not only to study what is required, but to pursue on their own areas in which they are interested in and appreciate their students’ efforts. Finally, teacher has to leave his emotional baggage outside the classroom. The classroom is a stage, and to be effective the teacher must in some cases be an actor. I think the students do not want to interrupt their concentration by worrying about what might be bothering the teacher.
A good teacher is also able to communicate with his students. I want a teacher who can add pace and humor to the class. Therefore we will have a good time learning and make a lot of progress because we are not afraid to make mistakes; we can take chances to learn lots of new things. Encouraging and patient are also the characteristics of a good teacher. Students need a teacher who will not give up on them. When the teacher encourages positively, the students will apply themselves more diligently. I want a teacher who will treat me as a person, on an equal basis with all the members of the class, regardless of sex, race... As teachers, you must look carefully at our classes to be certain that you are including everyone equally.
The essence of teaching is very difficult to qualify but this one line leads me directly to my most essential criterion of a good teacher. It says: “That which is essential cannot be seen with the eyes. Only with the heart can one know it rightly”. Those characteristics listed above may be not enough but they are the main criterions of a good teacher which is someone I am trying hard to become.

According to Gravells (2012) in order to be a successful and ‘good’ teacher it is essential that you teach your specialist subject in a way that will actively involve, engage and encourage your students during every lesson. It is also important to remember that it is not just the teaching that takes place within the lesson but it is also crucial to focus on the learning. In order to be an outstanding teacher, one must have multiple qualities and a certain demeanor. An outstanding teacher must first have a personality that is opened to change and continuous learning. The field of education is ever developing to meet the needs of a diverse population. Therefore, teachers must be prepared to adapt and seek out professional development opportunities in order to meet the needs of all learners. An outstanding teacher must also be willing to commit to working beyond the walls of their own classroom. Teaching is a profession that requires a career presence beyond the traditional forty hour work week. Once an individual has taken on this role, they must be prepared to assist their students by providing extra instructional time, developing and preparing lessons that encourage students to reach their full potential as well as participate in extracurricular activities that build both a sense of community…

A great teacher must be fair to absolutely everyone. This includes treating every student with the same respect; having no favourites. Teachers who do this will almost always receive that respect in return from the students. This helps the class function well so the student will learn more. They also create fair guidelines and rules for the classroom. Along with these come reasonable punishments in case they are broken. A great teacher is understanding and knows when to bend the rules a little. For instance, when a student has many extracurricular activities it may be difficult to get all there homework done on time; an excellent teacher would recognize this and talk to the student about it. If teachers are not fair with all of their students, they will not get the respect they desire. This in turn leads to difficulties in the classroom and disobliging students. The reason why students do not enjoy unfair teachers is that they do not understand that students have other obligations after class sometimes.…

    * The first characteristic necessary in being the ideal teacher is being involved. Teachers will become like second parents to many students in their career, so being involved is crucial. When you think of a teacher, many assume the only thing they can be involved in is standing in front of a classroom and giving homework, this is certainly not the case. For instance, teachers know they may be faced with a student who is having a hard time at home, such as being abused and in many cases have no-one else to turn to. The ideal teacher makes it a point to get involved so that any student feels confident enough that they can talk to their teacher. When I was in school I hit the age that I thought I knew everything and was getting into trouble, I look back now and thank god that I had some outstanding teachers who helped me through.…

Finally, to be "outstanding," teachers need to be understanding in their classroom. Many times students will come to their teacher with problems, the student deserves a chance to explain or state their case. A good teacher would listen to the student and consider the instance rather than jumping to conclusions. Having these traits can lead to becoming an outstanding teacher.…

From the questionnaires and interviews I have conducted, I have found that there are many important qualities of an effective educator. The first teacher I interviewed, Mr. Richards thought control of the class was the most important quality, whereas the second teacher I interviewed thought control of the class wasn’t all that important but good knowledge and patience were most important. This shows that the subject you are teaching can have an impact on how effective your teaching skills are. For e.g. Mrs. Dean is an English teacher and she believes good knowledge and patience are important when teaching a class, and Mr. Richards is a Mathematics teacher and he believes that control of the class is a very important skill to have when teaching.…

Who is a teacher? This term names someone who decided to pass their knowledge to others. There are two different sorts of teachers. There are those who are truly devoted to their profession and took an oath to educate others. On the other hand there are those who suffer every moment they spend in the classroom full of students. In my belief, this has a great impact on the students and the amount of knowledge they get during their student years. Therefore, I agree with the statement that teachers have to be born with certain talents. I will point out some of these qualities in the following lines; they are in my opinion crucial for a good teacher.…
