The Character Sherri Valance In The Outsiders
The character Sherri Valance, otherwise known as Cherry because of her bright red hair is the only main female character in The Outsiders. She stands as a link between the greasers and the socs. In the following paragraphs, I will be talking about the importance of her character, how the character stands as a link between the gangs, and how her character helps to solve the problem. I would say that Cherry is a big character in the book. In some ways, Bob’s death was Cherry’s fault. If she and Marcia hadn’t asked Pony and Johnny to come and sit with her and Marcia, the events that led to Bob’s death probably wouldn’t have happened. The socs wouldn’t have seen the Greasers with their girls, and Pony would’ve went right home. Cherry is the …show more content…
Cherry and Pony became friends as they talked about their lives and their feelings. When Pony told Cherry about when a group of socs beat Johnny badly, as Pony says “I had nearly forgotten that Cherry was listening to me. But when I came back to reality and looked at her, I was startled to find her as white as a sheet.” (pg. 34) They were able to really opened up to each other, and if they didn’t make a connection, Pony and Johnny might have ended up in jail. Johnny was protecting Pony and stabbed and killed Bob, a soc, who was also Cherry’s boyfriend. Johnny and Pony were scared and ran away to an old abandoned church to avoid going to jail. Dally came and picked them up to get something to eat since they were starving. As they were eating, Dally told the boys that the “good-looking broad from the drive-in”, otherwise known as Cherry, was now a spy for the greasers. She also told the truth about what actually happened during the court case. Johnny was dead at this time, but it proved that Pony was innocent. Cherry was a very important character in The Outsiders, being the only main female role. She brought a bit of romance and softness to the book, but also showed the true meaning of friendship,

Mandala Project In S.E Hinton’s novel The Outsiders, the character Darry is profoundly different on the outside than on the inside. To begin with, Darry is like a wolf on the exterior, but more like a puppy on the inside. Darry is like a wolf because he is protective of his family, fierce and angry under a cool exterior. For example, he is protective and angry when he yells at and hits Pony when they are arguing after Pony falls asleep in the lot. On the other hand, he is like a puppy in that he is vulnerable.…

He dreams of “‘...someplace without greasers or Socs, with just people’”(42). He can see beyond social ranking and sabotage, instead preferring a world without labels. He can even tell that the abuse he suffers isn’t permanent, and chooses to live away from his parents. Johnny is one of the younger members of Ponyboy’s gang, but he is smart enough to see that his misfortune was never caused by the Socs. Johnny learns that he doesn’t need the acceptance of his family or of his fellow greasers, and decides to make a leap of faith that will give him the freedom he has always desired. Johnny killed Bob not out of hate for Socs, but in order to save Ponyboy’s life. This showed incredible awareness and sincerity for his friends, which is very heroic. Later in the novel Johnny saved multiple kids’ lives by pulling them out of a burning building. He was “...red marked from falling embers and sweat streaked, but he grinned…” showing he wasn’t afraid of doing the right thing (79). If he never went into the building, he wouldn’t have died and nobody would have forced him to help. The reason he ran back in was to try to compensate for killing Bob and forcing Ponyboy to be on the run with him. This was a sign that Johnny was mature enough to sacrifice his life in order to protect other innocent ones. His complete and utter respect and selflessness earned him a title in the newspaper as a hero, and on his deathbed he wasn’t afraid to leave. Johnny’s love for his closest friends caused him to die peacefully and with a cleared name, which he earned even when he didn’t think he…
