Obstacles are the hardest to overcome in a journey, but once you overcome them they will eventually teach you an important lesson. In primary school, my academics were extremely poor and l was always behind everyone. I had never completed any class work my teachers set me or even put effort into anything. My parents never payed any attention on my academics because they wanted me to enjoy life. So from kindergarten to year 4 l lived a carefree life. I learnt my alphabet 2 years later than everyone else because l never focused in class. My mathematical skills were extremely poor. I couldn’t add, subtract, multiply or divide. I even had trouble identifying the difference between higher and lower numbers. Neither my parents nor myself payed attention to these things until I was in year five, and the application to sit the selective school exams was shoved in my face. That was the moment l realized how oblivious I was to everything, and how there was little chance of me even passing the exam. I began working extremely hard under my parent’s support and encouragement. And I began to improve step by step. In 3 months l caught up with everyone at school. I was extremely happy with where I was, but it still wasn’t enough for me. By being approached with this obstacle, l was able to learn that you can achieve anything by working hard and there aren’t any shortcuts in life. Despite being very young at the time I will always acknowledge it as the worst obstacle l had to encounter.…

Webster’s 1828 Dictionary defines education as “the bringing up, as a child; to instruction; formation of manners. Education comprehends all that series of instruction and discipline which is intended to enlighten the understanding, correct the temper, and form the manners and habits of youth, and fit them for usefulness in their future stations.” Since the 18th century education and the philosophy of education have taken a radical journey from high esteem and voluntary participation to a compulsory predetermined education. No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and other educational reforms promoting high-stakes testing, accountability and global markets continue to drive education policy. Parents, educators and lawmakers need to question whether the new approach to education should replace the previous successful model of education. Over the past two centuries the educational evolution that has taken place and the resulting current policies of NCLB actually undermines successful academic growth and America’s capacity to maintain an educated civic-minded society.…
