The Cat Cartoon: Felix The Cat
Felix the Cat could be nominated the founder of the Cat Cartoons history.

His debut was almost a hundred years ago, in December 1919, starring in "The Adventures of Felix" silent film.
This start was quite unusual as in these early days newspapers used to publish comic strips however Paramount Pictures took the chance to start with a silent movie; it was a success.

Felix's great success also motivated the birth of imitators like Julius, Waffles and Krazy Kat.

He also become a popular mascot and was featured in several place throughout the world (Italy, Japan, USA, etc.).

Felix is still with us, in dolls, NHL Felix Potvin's helmet (Boston Bruins), as a cat food in Europe, and even in an episode of The Simpsons.

Movies have been around since Thomas Edison’s invention of the Kinetoscope in 1894. The Kinetoscope, or peep show, was a tall, wooden box that allowed a person to look inside and see moving images. Viewing images was made possible by the film moving past a shutter over a light source. The Kinetoscope, however, had a two major flaws: the images viewed were jerky and didn’t move smoothly, and the viewing time for one show was only twenty seconds. Improvements to the Kinetoscope allowed it to hold more film and present at least a full minute of animation. Many early films had the theme of popular culture: dancers, performances, or reenactments of historical events.…

The main character of the series, Sam, was a humanoid-like character. Sam never spoke, but would lip-sync to any song. He likewise had his own delightful, goofy puppet who was created of papier-mâché. The show also included Kermit--not yet the frog--before his banjo playing days. These characters were created by Jim Henson but were performed by both him and his…

The cameras used to film "The Talkies" as they where known, had to be kept in enormous soundproof casing. This immediately hindered directors creativity and made movies such as Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) much more rigid. Because of the fascination with the lip-syncing that this new technology achieved less attention was played to other attributes that silent films used such as the comedic elements in Charlie Chaplin 's City Lights (1931.)…

Before the 1930’s or the first set of "talking picture films," all films were completely silent. Usually, they had some form of text card that would flash upon the screen explaining what had happened in the previous scene. To keep the film from just being a projected book, the film would be accompanied with anything from full orchestras to a pianist. A correctly timed note or a special tone would almost give a sense of depth to a two-dimensional image. Not only this, but the music had a second purpose, which was to try to silence or overpower the loud projectors. During the 1930’s, the first use of "talking picture films,” made its way to the big screen, thanks to improvement in technology. Although music was first used primarily as simple…

The kitten is a short story by Alexander Reid which he wrote in 1914. It is a story about a hired man who found a cat with a litter of kittens on the farm yard he was working at, he told his master of his discovery and his master ordered him to “get rid of them” so he went and took the cat “to the stable, flung her in and latched the door”. Then he went and grabbed an old potato sack from the loft and returned to the kittens. He then lifted and flung the kittens one by one into the old potato sack, and then he went down to the stream with the potato sack with the kittens and sat it down beside the stream. He then tried to move a boulder to make a pool to drown the kittens in but it wouldn’t budge. By the time he got back to the potato sack a second kitten made its way out of the bag but he flung it back in and tied it shut again. He then chased the kitten that escaped but it defied him so he made it his mission to hunt the kitten and kill it.…
