The entire poem of Eldorado is supposed to be a love story. The story talks about how a knight had lost the love of his life and goes after her. To search for Eldorado the knight goes on a journey in which he searches for her, day and night, with great persistence. While on the journey the knight gains knowledge through his travels and realizes that his love is gone and he loses her trail that he is following. After he realizes that she is gone he goes through a state of depression and commits suicide. After he dies he meets and angel and tells the knight that his love Eldorado has died and gone to hell. The shadow (angel) then tells the knight how he can get to Eldorado.
This poem opens telling us about a Man that is brave so he is called a knight. I believe it is a man because they say “a gallant knight” and knights were usually men. He is traveling trying to find the love of his life that had left him, because it says
The second line explains that while he was searching he became “bold” which I believe signifies he has gained knowledge from his journey, which comes with growing old. Since knowledge comes with age the line “But he grew old” has two significant meanings. The third line says “o’er his heart a shadow” which from context in the last line the poem is saying he began to figure out he was not going to find Eldorado and he started to become depressed so the shadow over his heart is representing he has become depressed. The last two lines say “No spot on the ground that looked like Eldorado” which means that he is losing the trail of where his love has gone, and the “No spot of ground” is the trail of Eldorado. Since the knight has lost the trail of Eldorado this also strengthens the interpretation he is
