The Cask Of Amontillado Setting Analysis
The Cask of Amontillado is about a man named Montresor who is vengeful toward a man named Fortunato for the humiliation he made him suffer in the past. His plan of revenge for Fortunato is planned perfectly. Fortunato does not suspect anything because Montresor plans the timing, location, and all other aspects of the plan perfectly. With this plan, Montresor is able to lure Fortunato and execute his plan. This results in a slow and painful death for Fortunato and a successful day for Montresor. The setting is described as dark, gloomy, and eerie when the characters enter the catacombs. “We had passed through long walls of piled skeletons, with casks and puncheons intermingling, into the inmost recesses of the catacombs.” The setting affects the characters and plot because the setting can develop or support the behavior, motive, or point of view of a character. The dark setting of the catacombs support Montresor’s intentions toward Fortunato by giving him the perfect place to execute his plan. “Its walls had been lined with human remains, piled to the vault overhead, in the fashion of the great catacombs of Paris.” The time of year and time of day give him the perfect time to execute his plan without anyone …show more content…
When Montresor and Fortunato go into the catacombs, no one would hear them because of the festivities taking place above them, which supports the secluded feeling. The further Montresor and Fortunato travel into the catacombs, the stronger the eerie feeling grows. The eerie feeling grows because we know Montresor’s intentions toward Fortunato, and we know that the further they travel down the catacombs, the closer Fortunato is to his slow and painful death. Other details like the nitre on the walls give an old and dark feeling to the atmosphere. It may also infer that the catacombs are cold and damp and give an impression of uneasiness and

In The cask of Amontillado there is a very creepy mood. This mood is creepy because you’re walking through the catacombs of montresor's. Walking underground in a hallway of bones and skulls of humans. I know that they’re in a catacomb of montresor's because on (pg60) it says “ stood together on the damp ground of the catacombs of the montresor’s. This whole setting would just give me the creeps. The two literary devices used are symbol and mood. Symbol makes this quote true in this story. This is true because montresor’s coat of arms which is the snake biting the foot that is crushing it. This represents montresor getting revenge on fortunato for his supposed insult. When they both walked through the catacombs , montresor describes his coat of arms in a descriptive way. The other literary device that is used in this short story is, mood. The mood is very important in the story. It has a lot of terror and fear in the setting which connects to the mood. This mood is created because of the setting which is the cave with the bones, dampness and darkness. This set a mood that is not so…

The vaults are insufferably damp. They are encrusted with nitre.” “Let us go, nevertheless. The cold is merely nothing. Amontillado! You have been imposed upon. And as for Luchesi, he cannot distinguish Sherry from Amontillado”. (Meyer,741).Montresor knows that Fortunato is a very arrogant man. What is so ironic about this conversation is that Montresor seems to care about Fortunato’s health and yet he wants to murder him. Another example; of irony would be when Montresor tells all of servants to stay home for the night. The last example of irony , would be that they are set in the middle of the Catacombs and how Fortunato asks Montresor if he is in the Masons. ““You do not…

As Edgar Allen Poe described the use of colors in the Cask of Amontillado, he also shows details of the specific places. While Montresor is one of the few character involved in the story, another character, who is the one that eventually died at the end is Fortunato. The places Fortunato encounters with Montresor does included specific Gothic views. One of the places Edgar Allan Poe shares in the story would be the time both characters are in the catacombs. Catacombs are normally a place for many people in the medieval era to be buried.…

The story starts out with Montresor running into Fortunato, his enemy who has irreparably insulted him, at a carnival. “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as best I could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge” (pg. 236). Carnivals put on performances, just as Montresor puts on a show for Fortunato by portraying that they are friends when, in reality, Montresor is plotting out his revenge for him. The setting then moves to the catacombs of the Montresors, where he lures Fortunato with the hope of getting a flagon of Amontillado. Montresor also puts on a show by continuously trying to get Fortunato to turn around, saying he can go get Luchesi, Fortunato’s competition in the wine business, and by mentioning repeatedly his concern for Fortunato’s health. “Come,” I said, “we will go back; your health is precious….Besides, there is Luchesi-” (pg. 238) He makes the reader picture the catacomb as dark, never ending, and deathly by saying, “The vaults are insufferably damp. They are encrusted with nitre” (pg. 237). Poe creates this nightmare of “the innermost recess of the catacombs” by describing the bones and intermingled puncheons (pg. 238).…

Of course, this scheme could never work if it was only "half-baked," but Montresor is very thorough, since he took care of all the preparations. He told his attendants to stay at home while he left, but he knew that "these orders were sufficient…to insure their immediate disappearance, one and all, as soon as my back was turned." So in doing this he knew no one would be home to see them going into the catacombs together, but then seeing only him come out. He even made sure to hide a trowel in his cloak and under a pile of bones in the catacomb he "…uncovered a quantity of building stone and mortar," which he had placed there beforehand as not to waste any time. Also even a drunk would think it strange for someone to carry a load of mortar and bricks into a catacomb with them, but having all the materials there he started before the "spirited" Fortunato realized that he was being murdered in the most horrific…

An element of symbolism is expressed when the story turns its attention to Fortunato’s and Montresor’s clothes. “He [Fortunato] had on a tight-fitting parti-striped dress, and his head was surmounted by the conical cap and bells.” This symbolizes Fortunato’s foolishness in listening to Montresor, and ignoring the growing danger Montresor was leading him into. The symbolism also reveals how Montresor fools Fortunato into venturing deep in the catacombs by getting him drunk. In addition, Montresor uses Fortunato’s…

One of these is evident at the start. As soon as the narrator, Montresor speaks his first line, it is obvious that he is fed up with his friend, Fortunato. He later on goes to say that he never gave Fortunato even a clue that he is mad at him. This shows that he has decided now is the time to strike, and once he has committed, by leading Fortunato down into the catacombs, he can really not go back, seeing as his lie would fall apart, and Fortunato would realize there is no Amontillado. When Fortunato states that a cold will not kill him, and Montresor responds with “True”, it gives readers an inkling that there is a more devious plan in the making. He also orders his servants to all leave the house, seeing as he will be passing through his apartment on the way to the catacombs. This implies that he doesn’t want them seeing him for some reason, and as the story progresses you figure out that it is because he does not want to be traced back to the disappearance of…

First, Montresor states that he does not want to be caught by anyone. We know that this condition was met because the narrator says, “There were no attendants at home; they had absconded to make merry in honor of the time. I had told them that I should not return until the morning, and had given them explicit orders not to stir from the house.” ( Poe. 619 ) This was an important condition to be met because if Montresor did not tell the attendants of the house not to stir from the house his plan to lure Fortunato down through the catacombs to his death would have been…

Being set at “dusk, one evening during the supreme madness of the carnival season” (392) contributes to the irony of the story, since a carnival is usually considered a happy and enjoyable place, as well as the façade Montresor is putting on to conceal his plans to kill Fortunato. When the characters move to the catacombs, the environment begins to become more revealing, describing “long walls of piled skeletons, with casks and puncheons intermingling,” which foreshadows Fortunato’s death. As they descend deeper, the darkness and skeletons that fill the catacombs express the theme of death and vengeance much more strongly, and allows Montresor to finally fulfill his…

He did this, because he wanted it to go with an ironic, spooky and sophisticated tone, in order to create a menacing and a disturbing mood. The story is set in Montresor’s family crypt. This is so, because crypts have plenty of bones and are dark and unpromising. The fact that the story takes place during a carnival is important, since it leads to the irony. It occurs at this time, so that you don’t expect a murder to occur, since a place happiness and joy isn't a stereotypical place for a murder to occur. The setting and word choice create the mood. In The Cask of Amontillado, it states, “I passed down a long and winding staircase, requesting him to be cautious as he followed. We came at length to the foot of the descent, and stood together upon the damp ground of the catacombs of the Montresors.” In this excerpt, the wording, such as “winding,” “cautious,” “descent,” “damp,” and “catacombs” were carefully chosen in order to create an unforeseen and a disturbing…
