The story of “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe has many characteristics of Romanticism. Romanticism is the movement of freedom and imagination of art and literature, this era was from early 1800 to 1860 which is the early 19th century this was all changed by the writing of Edgar Allen Poe by showing how he could get away from peritain writing. The first charcteristic is intuition over reasoning, the second form that shows romanticism characteristics is individual freedom or self believe, The final charcterisitc is a main plot of puritan writing which was somewhat implemented on the ideas of romanticism writing is innocence.
How intuition was shown in romanticism in the story “The Cask of Amontillado”. This appears in the first paragraph the most due to how he wants to get his revenge on Fortunato. Montresor is so mad about the pain Fortunato pain he caused so he speaks his mind in this paraphrase “you, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however , that I have utterance to a threat” (Poe 866). This excerpt is saying that he needs the revenge and Fortunato doesn’t see him as a threat yet but he will when the time comes. The third main point is about innocence of Characters. This appeared mostly all over but they are focusing more on Fortunato because he is innocent about everything and is not sober so he is putting trust in Montresor. As Fortunato tries to convince Montresor to let him be “for the love of god Montresor”(Poe 870). This is trying to tell Montresor that Fortunato wants to be let go from behind the wall and how he can do this in vain. This shows the charcterisitics of Romanticisms by Fortunato being so innocent and trusting
