The Cask Of Amontillado Irony

Both The Cask of Amontillado and The Leap exhibit fantastic aspects of an amazing narrative, all of this is put into a story less than ten pages. However, that being said, The Cask of Amontillado is better at portraying imagery, using suspense to its advantage, and using several forms of irony to tie all of these aspects together into a very enjoyable read. In The Cask of Amontillado, the author uses irony in all forms, which are dramatic, situational, and verbal. The author uses verbal irony almost every time Montressor speaks, hence he continuously makes his concern for Fortunato’s health known. However, he is thinking about the exact opposite, and wants to kill him instead. Moreover, the author uses dramatic irony throughout the story,
Furthermore, the irony builds on the story’s suspense and ties into almost every aspect of The Cask of Amontillado’s plot. Speaking of suspense, Edgar Allen Poe uses suspense in the story by letting you know of Montressor’s plans, which keeps the reader invested in the story wondering what will happen to Fortunato and when Montressor will enact on his plans. Also, we are never told how he plans to kill Fortunato, so you have to read in order to find out. Not only do suspense and irony make the story great, its imagery pushes it over the top. The Cask of Amontillado uses vivid detail that helps the reader visualize the setting which makes the story so much more real. In all these aspects, The Cask of Amontillado excels in, and The Leap lacks. There is little to no suspense in The Leap, and very few cases of irony. Not only this, but it also does not portray the setting with imagery. This makes reading the story hard because you are not able visualize the setting and feel as if you are there with the characters and can understand the struggle they
