The Cask Of Amontillado: A Literary Analysis

In “The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant and “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe the main character in each story, Mathilde from “The Necklace” and Montresor from “The Cask of Amontillado”, seek revenge. In “The Necklace”, Guy de Maupassant takes the reader through the story of a woman who is invited to a ball but does not have a fancy ensemble like the other women attending the ball. Mathilde turns to her friend, Madame Forestier, and beseeched her to let Mathilde borrow one of her elegant jewels. On the way out of the ball she loses the diamond necklace she borrowed and later decides to replace it so Madame Forestier does not notice it had disappeared. Mathilde and her husband are in debt for ten years because of the necklace replacement. After they are out of debt Mathilde is out walking about she runs to Madame Forestier who tells her that the original diamond necklace was false, which makes Mathilde want revenge on Madame Forestier for making her do all the work for a real necklace even though the original necklace was a fake. In “The Cask of Amontillado”describes the story of Montresor who wants revenge on Fortunato for some reason unknown to the reader. Montresor leads Fortunato down to the catacombs promising a special wine called
Mathilde did not gain vengeance upon Madame Forestier she ended up being proud of herself and became more grateful for the things she had. The main message between these short stories is revenge in the moment may seem like the best and most satisfying option but in the end you will regret your decision. This is shown in “The Cask of Amontillado” when Montresor goes through with his plan of revenge and regrets for the rest of his life. This is also shown in “The Necklace” when Mathilde does not act on her desire for revenge and she becomes a happier and grateful
