Ronald Cotton was twice charged for sexual assault on two white women. He is accused for burglary and rape, crimes that he didn’t commit. Despite his innocence, Ronald Cotton was sentenced to life. Come to think of it, the race has played a tremendous role to Ronald imprisonment. The fact that he has little resemblances with the true assailant, Bobby Pool, was unfortunately the perfect occasion for the jury to condemn him and end any further investigations. For people who believe that visible traits such as skin color, age, dress or not legally reprehensible behavior makes them more likely to attract unwanted attention, being arrested by a police officer can be felt as a violation of their right. Most people come into contact with the police at one time or another. In these circumstances, some people may feel that their privacy is threatened, even if it seems sometimes that the police intervention was not justified, but in most cases, contact with the police should not give rise to any violence. Nevertheless, above all other race, black people are more likely to be victim of racial profiling. Some of the main stereotypes about black people in United States is that they are often the reason of insecurity; they are more likely to get caught with crime like selling drugs as weed or marijuana, which eventually leads police officers into some reactions like deeply investigate or check the car of a colored man, seeing a colored man wearing hoodies as a suspicious individual. Indeed, this phrase “driving while black” came from drivers or motorist which have the conviction that they may be stopped by the police just because of the fact that they are black. Statistics based on the “Police public contract survey” show that it’s more likely for black drivers or motorist to be pulled over by the police, and often there’s not plausible reasons of why they are stopped.
