Career Fair Report

The Career Fair was a great experience for me, especially because I had never been to one before. Overall, I met with about six to seven organizations. I could see myself working for some while not for others. In my opinion, half of the companies I spoke to were viable options for me down the line. Because my major is Computer Information Systems, I was mainly interested with internships and jobs that have to do with either Information Technology (IT) or Marketing and Sales. Hopefully, either one of these paths can lead to a major leadership position within an organization. My most productive encounter was with Brandon from TIAA Cref. He did a great job of explaining what my role within the organization would be as an intern and how that role would expand with a full-time job. He also explained that his company was looking for interns in both of the fields I’m interested in. The only downside was that the closest location is in Charlotte, NC and I definitely need to stay in the Upstate area over the summer. Other than that, my brief encounter with Brandon was a success as I left my resume’ and contact information. Another productive interaction I had was with Shalonda from Synnex. I had never heard of Synnex, however, I was intrigued by a sign that was posted saying they were looking for salespeople. I believe that I can pitch anything to anybody and I am very confident with my personality and myself so I decided to get more information. It turns out that Synnex is an Information Technology specific company that offers its services to other publishing companies and equipment manufacturers. Shalonda explained that an internship was available in Greenville over the summer and invited me to join LinkedIn, which is a more professional social network. Apparently that is how Synnex keeps in touch with it’s prospective employees; I created one for that sole reason and left my resume’ and

One career that I am interested in is an Account Executive in Advertising. Tasks for such a job include: planning ads for businesses, picking the best way to advertise, meeting with artists to plan ads and show plans to customers. Other qualities are figuring out the costs of ads, working with budgets, layouts, computers, and products being presented. To be a successful Account Executive, one must be good at organizing projects and making decisions along with getting along well with others, being creative, dealing with stress, and speaking and writing well. It is recommended that you have a 4-Year Degree. It is recommended that you sell things, speak in public, write for a newspaper, work on a market research project, or play sports leading up to the job. The salary range for such a job is $66,500 to $102,500 per year. There is occasional travel that accompanies the job. Typically, most work is done in an office. It is a medium size category and is on the decline. Another career that I am interested in is a Financial Manager. He is responsible for keeping records of money a business makes and what it spends in taxes, wages, and benefits. He also looks at how much money a business made previously and estimates what it will make in the future along with telling management about new tax laws and insurance changes and making reports to the government. He gives management advice on how to spend their money, and uses computers, government reports, tax forms, insurance policies, audits, calculators, and financial reports. To be a good Financial Manager you have to understand business and finance and look at and understand detailed information. You also have to think creatively and solve problems and manage staff, along with speaking and writing well. You have to be good with computers and working independently. Do you ever find it hard to figure out where they are hiring ? or finding a job that suits your needs? if you answered “yes” to either of these questions, there is a skill called “networking”. So, you must now be asking yourself what is networking? As it states in a website called definitions.net, networking means “To take steps to make and cultivate the acquaintance of people who can be helpful to oneself, especially in finding new employment, advancing to a higher position in one's occupation, or exchanging information.” (GCIDE,5). This skill can be a very easy way to find a job, networking can be done either by face to face, gatherings, or contact methods such as email, phone, social and/or business networking websites. The gatherings can take place at a bar, restaurant, club or even the library. This is not a way to meet a new friend or a mate. People will give you their numbers to be in contact for business purposes only! The moment you try to get in contact with someone emotionally, there is no returning back. You will not be allowed to socialize or be a part of the networking system again. In the last few days, I’ve tried to network with my classmates from…

One of the most important decisions of my life was choosing to go back to school. I was 30 years old, raising two kids at the time, and the last thing in the world I wanted to do was go back to school. I had previously attended cosmetology school and received a degree in its study. I had been working as a stylist for 5 years but it just was not enough. I needed to support my family and live comfortably and working under someone else’s authority could not fulfill my goals and dreams. One dream of mine is to one day own my own salon and become a successful business owner. I knew that a cosmetology degree could not teach me the skills needed to run a business and be successful. This is when I began thinking that I should go back to school for a business management degree. There was only one thing on my mind at this time, my age, I wondered if I could handle college at this point in my life.…
