When the Kyklops had gone to take care of his sheep, Odysseus and his men entered his cave. The cheeses, lambs, and more food was all tempting to them. The men asked if they could take some and run off with it. Odysseus refused. When the Kyklops came back, he asked who they were. This bag would help Odysseus and his men on their journey home. Odysseus did not tell his fellow men what the bag contains. As Odysseus and his men were arriving at Ithka Odysseus fell asleep after driving the ship for nine days. While he was asleep the men opened the bag thinking it was some type of treasure. When the bag was opened winds rushed everywhere and blew the ship back undoing the nine days of sailing. Odysseus sailed to…

Although these predicaments were extremely challenging, Odysseus always found a way to survive. His survival depended on his mind and body combined. Without this important balance of thought and strength, it is obvious that Odysseus would not have made it home safely, or he may have not even made it home at all. Throughout Homer’s “The Odyssey,” Odysseus’ actions and choices are the driving point of the plot. When he and his crew encounter Polyphemus the Cyclops, he tries to secure his legacy by shouting his real name, and giving other important information away. The Cyclops prays that a curse befall him and his friends and Poseidon hears him. After this, half of Odysseus’ men are turned into swine when they encounter an enchantress and give into temptation, and though no men are killed, the crew is again delayed in their journey by a year. Misfortune and death are prevalent throughout the consequent chapters, where men are constantly lost, and those that survive begin to lose faith in their leader. By the end of chapter 12, all of the men have died,…

On the subject of heroism, Maya Angelou once wrote that “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people” (Angelou). The general picture that comes to mind when the word “hero” is said is the idea of Superman or Wonder Woman; however, a true hero is anyone who tries to make their world a better place. Odysseus, the hero in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, fought in the Trojan War and embarked on a ten year journey to return to his kingdom, Ithaca. During his quest to return home, he encounters many supernatural forces that show both his heroic, and not so heroic actions. He faces countless challenges, meets new people, and has to make sacrifices for the overall benefit of his crew (Bowler and Homer 645-705).…

One of the first temptations in the Odyssey is the longing for home. The first encounter with this temptation is at the land of the Lotus eaters. On their way from Troy, Odysseus and his men land on the island of the lotus eaters. The native people there give the men a plant name lotus. But, this is no ordinary plant, and the temptation to eat was irrespirable. This plant erased all memory of home and family from even the strongest minded man. The men had the temptation to stay on the island but, sooner or late Odysseus had to tie the men in the ship and scurry away from the island. This part of the story might even make us realize we all need friends like Odysseus to help us realize when we are blinded by one path we need to turn and go to another. In other words if were stuck on the island of the lotus eater or “the blinded path”, we need a friend like Odysseus to tie us into a ship or “make us see a new path”.…

When Odysseus arrived back in Ithaca, he went to Eumaeus’s hut. “Odysseus turned his back on the harbor and followed a rough track leading through the woods and up to the hills towards the place where Athena had told him he would meet the worthy swineherd, who of all the servants Odysseus had acquired had shown himself to be the most faithful steward of his property” (The Odyssey). After reaching the hut, guard dogs came after Odysseus, but Eumaeus’s stopped them, and let Odysseus in his hut. “The good swineherd let the way to his hut, ushered Odysseus in and invited him to sit down on some brushwood that he piled up for him and covered with the shaggy skin of a wild goat, large and thick, which served as his own mattress” (The Odyssey). One can see that Eumaeus is a true servant to his guest. After letting Odysseus in, the swineherd went out and prepared an abundant meal for Odysseus. “He selected two, carried them in, and slaughtered them both…When he had roasted it all, he served it up piping hot on the spits, set it in front of Odysseus, and sprinkled it with white barely-meal…he took a seat facing his guest, and encouraged him to eat” (The Odyssey). Through Eumaeus, Homer gave a great example about how one should treat their neighbor with kindness. Once Odysseus had finished telling Eumaeus his story, Eumaeus made a bed for Odysseus so he could sleep in the hut with him. “The swineherd jumped up, placed a bed for him by the fire…
