The death of almost everyone on Himmel Street had impacted me the most. The aforementioned reason affected me the most because it reminded me that you can not control your fate. We had read many outside texts to supplement our understanding of The Book Thief. An example is John Donne's poem, “Death Be Not Proud”, this one helped my understanding of the book and the world the most because it helped picture the different portrayals of death. The other readings helped my understanding of the novel by giving me some background knowledge of the book. For example, the Auschwitz article showed what it actually was like in the concentration camps. The reading impacted my understandings of the world by showing me people give up even there most valuable
Such as, love, friendship, and courage. The Book Thief has many characters who learn love in a hate filled society. In Nazi Germany even small acts of kindness can involve penalty. For example giving another person something as seemingly small as a crust of stale bread or even a smile. Friendship was a theme in The Book Thief. An example, in the book would be Max and Liesel's friendship. Liesel was friends with Max even though in Nazi Germany it would have been seen as, “wrong” and an act of treason. The characters in The Book Thief show great courage in the face of great hardship. For example, it took a lot of courage for the Hubermanns to take in Max. The risk of that would have been life threatening. It took extreme courage for Max to even travel to Molching. One small mistake, and he would have been toast. There was no way for Max to know the Hubermanns were trustworthy. Another portrayal of courage in The Book Thief is when Rudy and Liesel gave bread to the Jews. The reason Zusak is trying to teach courage is so that people stand up for what is right and correct unjust laws.
