Introduction El Dormitorio, a nonprofit organization, co-founded by executive director Nancy Burns, strives to empower the homeless Latino community in downtown Pacific City. Peter Marks, attorney and former board president, has agreed to chair the evening's meeting as a favor to Ted Guillen, current board president. Ted chose not to attend due to a conflict of interest involving an agenda item. Carrie, the agency’s previous volunteer coordinator, interrupted the meeting with a group of volunteers supporting her planned protest a few minutes after the meeting began. This leaves Peter, the protagonist, feeling ambivalent and flustered as he evaluates how to effectively resolve

Peter has extensive experience as a litigation lawyer doing pro bono work representing refugees from El Salvador and Guatemala in political asylum cases. Peter’s expertise and passion for the mission of the organization motivated him to research nonprofit law and the duties of board members following his acceptance of board president. Over the years, Peter contributed greatly to the development and growth of El Dotorimo. He exemplified strong leadership, created new staff positions, trained board members, engaged in multiple fundraiser opportunities, and formalied multiple procedures and policies. Peter is diligent, tactful, and diplomatic when acting under pressure and models appropriate behavior during his interactions with others. In addition, he has developed a strong relationship with Nancy and gives much of El Dormitorio’s success to her direct influence and leadership. First, Peter must display the ability to keep individuals and the situation calm and under control. Lost Angels: Skid Row Is My Home is an investigative documentary that gives us the untold story of the homeless and disadvantaged living on Skid Row. Skid Row is a name given to fifty blocks radius in Downtown Los Angeles whose residents tends to have a lower income or are homeless. Many people view the homeless as being dirty, poor and even lazy; it is very rare that we wonder why how they came to be in such a predicament. For many on Skid Row their battles are mental illness and grave poverty. The documentary introduces us to eight different but very similar individuals living on Skid Row; they tell us their very different stories and then explain their similar experiences living on Skid Row. We meet a transgender Caucasian male, an African- American mother of three, an old Caucasian female and her African American “fiancé”, they all suffer from mental illness in one form or the other and there is even an ex Olympian who battled through substance abuse. The only difference between these people and us are certain circumstances and situations. The film just sheds light and gives understanding to the fact that yes they are homeless, yes they lie in the street but they are people just like me and you. Watching this film had me literally questioning why we are socialized to believe being homeless is demeaning and a social taboo.…

The options that the BCBA had were really slim. Based on the Core Ethical Principles and the BACB Guidelines for Responsible Conduct there are two options that I suggested to try and assist the analyst. First he could disregarded the act of kindness and suggest that the mother do something that would help the treatment process. For example, maybe the mother could be reinforcing her son more than she has been when he does steal food as a part of the BCBAs treatment. The BCBA could politely deny the gifts and instead suggest an alternative that all parties would benefit from. The second option is what the behavior analyst discussed in the interview as to how he has been trying to handle it, which was to politely decline and explain the rules…

In Scott Bransford article “Camping for Their Live”, Bransford writes about a newlywed couple Marie and Francisco Caro and many other homeless people in California’s Central Valley. The Caros didn’t have enough money to put a down payment on a home therefore they became homeless. Bransford uses a concerned tone when writing about the homeless in California. Bransford has some strengths and some weaknesses in his article. The purpose of this article is to describe the development of tent cities and the people who live in them. Bransford is biased towards helping homeless people. Bransford has a concerned and sympathic tone in his article about the homeless people in California’s Central Valley.…

The atmosphere was very warm and inviting. I waited in the lobby about twenty minutes as the lady at the front desk was speaking on the phone. After she hung up, she was very friendly and went to get Ms. Fabiola Cervantes, as we had a scheduled appointment and had light communication through emails for about a week. After meeting with Ms. Cervantes I learned all about Latino Memphis, it’s clients, and what the agency provides for the community. Latino Memphis’s purpose is “We assist Latinos in the Greater Memphis area by connecting, collaborating and advocating for health, education and justice.” (Latino Memphis and Ebiz Solutions). They offer many different services at “El Centro” or the center, this is where Latino immigrants in the Memphis area can turn to for help of all kinds, including but not limited to, access to computers, assistance filling out any kind of government form or job application, clerical support, discussions with police officers about their rights and how to report crimes. “Tu Voz” is an ear, a voice, and an agent of change on issues impacting the Spanish speaking community of the Memphis area. Through advocacy, policy research, training and civic engagement activities, Tu Voz helps the Latino community to become more engaged and influential in the…
