The Blind Side Essay

In the film The Blind Side Michael has to overcome many challenges to achieve his goal of playing NFL football. Discuss the obstacles he faced throughout his life to fulfil his dream. How does he overcome these?
The Blind Side, a film released in November 20, 2009, produced by Gil Netter, Andrew A. Kosove and Broderick Johnson. Demonstrates what Michael Oher has to overcome in order to achieve his goal of playing American football at a national level Michael is a homeless boy who has run away from many foster parents to find his crack addicted mother. He is enrolled in a Christian school because of his sporting promise. One cold night after school Michael is spotted in a pair of shorts and a t.shirt by Leigh Anne Tuohy, the wife of Sean Tuohy; a teacher at his school. He is then asked where he is going and tells them the gym, because it is warm there. He is invited to get in the car and they take him to their place. He spends his first night of many at the Tuohy’s house. Through enduring the shame of homelessness and the difficulty of adolescence without a family to call his own, Michael eventually triumphs the obstacles he finds while reaching for his dream and is successful. Homelessness was a large obstacle in Michael’s life. Taken away from his mother at a very young age as she was unfit to look after him due to being a drug addict, Michael was fostered many times, although he always ran away searching for his mum. As he got older, Michael decided that he’d rather be homeless than live with foster parents and be separated from his mother. He had to find food by himself, wash his own clothes and find places to sleep.
Michael was lonely and lived without family mostly ’till he was taken in by the Tuohys. He hadn’t seen 11 of his 12 sibling since he was taken away from his mother. But saw one catering at a restaurant, he never saw his dad. The Tuohy family were kind to him and treated him like one of their own. It took a whole year before Leigh Anne Tuohy received a hug back from Michael. This shows how badly scared Michael was from never really having a family of his own that loved him.
At the time of Michael’s situation the majority of America was racist. This being so made it even more difficult for Michael to get good marks, friends and even just to be trusted. Leigh Anne Tuohy was criticized by her friends for adopting a black man one said “are you ok to have a black boy in the house when your daughter is there?” she replied “you should be ashame of yourself”. Michael was even bullied on the football field by the opposition for being black and received an unfair free against him due to the fact that he was black.

Tuohys help Michael overcome the hurt of not having a family by becoming his new family. He also was accepted by more white people because he became a successful NFL footballer and therefore less racism was directed at him. He also got a place to stay and was not homeless anymore. Through enduring the shame of homelessness and the difficulty of adolescence without a family to call his own, Michael eventually triumphs the obstacles he finds while reaching for his dream and is successful. Michael eventually makes it to the top being the first draft pick of 2009 for the Baltimore Ravens.
