the blind side
The movie The Blind side is a true story about the life of Michael Oher. Michael Oher was a young homeless and traumatized boy. Michael was taken from his mother at a young age. He was placed in different foster homes where he ran away from to get back to his mother. Michael Oher did not attend school around the ages18 months old through 10 years old. His mother was a drug addict. In the movie The Blind side, Michael Oher also known as “Big Mike” attends Wingate Christian School he did not know much of the work that they did in class; he only wrote his name. The little children at the school were afraid of him. S.J the son of Mrs.Tooie was the only one who was not afraid of “Big Mike”. One day after school Mrs.Tooie was picking up S.J and she seen them talking. She asked S.J who was that he was talking too; he answered her and said Big Mike. Michael Oher was seen at the end of a basketball game picking up the left over popcorn in the stands by Mr.Tooie. After leaving the gymnasium, Michael was walking down the street in the cold. The family by the last name of Tooie pulled their car over to talk to him. Mrs.Tooie asked Michael did he have a place to stay. Mrs.Tooie invited Michael to stay at their house for the night, so he could have a place to stay that night because it was too cold. Mr. Tooie did not agree with his wife decision because they did not know anything about Michael at the time. He was a complete stranger. The next day, Michael had straightened up the area where he slept and was on his way. Mrs. Tooie went down stairs to talk to him, but Michael was out the door. She caught him in the driveway. She told Michael that she would take him home. Michael went to get clothes from his house, but he had an eviction notice on his door. He came back to the car and told Mrs.Tooie that his mother was not there. Mrs.Tooie took “Big Mike” and bought him some clothes. Michael was now a part of the Tooie family. Mrs.Tooie decided to give Michael his own room in their house. Michael was grateful for what the Tooie family had done for them. One night Michael left the house and went back to his old neighborhood to look for his mother, so he could get his birth certificate because he wanted his drivers’ license. Michael and a drug dealer that lives in the neighborhood got into an altercation. Mrs. Tooie went seen Michael mother one day and told her that he was living with her and her family. Michael’s mother told Mrs.Tooie “Don’t be surprised if you wake up one day and he’s gone.” Michael grades had gotten better in school and he was placed on the football team. S.J and Michael started to work out and train him for the team. Michael graduated from high school and went to Ole Miss University. Michael was in the first round pick for the NFL draft where he played for Baltimore Ravens.
The moral of the story is a family changed someone’s life around for the good. This story touched me because the family who changed Michael Oher’s life did not have to do what they did. I help people as often as I can, not because I’ll receive a blessing in the end but because I have a good heart and I love to put a smile on people faces who needs or ask for help.

The movie of The Blind Side attempted to mimic the book as much as possible, however there were noticeable choices that the director made that changed the presentation of the movie compared to the picture that the book created. One of the main choices was to cut out a lot of the football facts that were presented in the book. Throughout the book, numerous chapters were dedicated to talking about the history of the importance of the left tackle and other players in the game, but in the movie, almost all of those scenes were cut out. This made the movie move faster unlike the book which was slow moving at times.…

John Lee Hancock’s “The Blind Side” explores a diverse range of aspects and notions of belonging through the techniques presented in the text. The characterization of the central character Michael Ohers being a big illiterate black African American teenager coming from a broken home and family sets the context for the rest of the film where he is faced with many barriers restricting his comfort and pushing him towards his total disengagement from the “White” Society. After the Touhy’s accept Michael into their home, he begins his long path transitioning from the old “Big Mike” to the new Michael Ohers. The barriers that Michael is faced with include the school he goes to and the environment he is residing in being a new experience to him since he has never had anything in his life and is coming into a rich family’s home. The school Michael ends up attending emphasises the fact explicitly that he does not belong to them which is reinforced by his soliloquy type poem where he writes from his heart and puts all of his emotions and thoughts onto paper and recognises that he is changing into somebody he does not know this is depicted in the quote “This is not Michael Oher” and is additionally portrayed when the football coach describes “Mikes type” in the quote “Most kids with Mike’s background will not even come in 200 miles of the school” this places extra emphasise Michaels skin colour and his lack of belonging to the area he is now living in and is reinforcing the fact that most people from his background wouldn’t even come close to the area and Michael is faced with these barriers and is tackling them head on. Leigh Anne Touhy provides Michael with psychological and safety needs and social and belonging needs by accepting him into her family and giving him a “new life” this is reinforced when she is told by her good friend Beth that “you are changing that boys life”, and she replies ”No, his changing mine”, the dialogue between these two characters has a deep…

Background does not matter when you are a hero. In the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, the author argues that heroism defines a person by their actions not by their background, history, or looks. The events at the church, the incidents that happened before the church and the aftermath all show the changes that happened over time that would eventually negate Ponyboy’s history and background and regard him as a hero. There are different points of heroism in the story and different forms of heroism in the story but for now we are going to look at the most important three, Cherry acting as a spy, Ponyboy rescuing the kids and what he was defined by before he was a hero.…
