In effect, by glossing over Selena’s transition into the Latin American the film Selena ignores her accomplishments in the Latin American market which was not easy to enter. Although the film touches on the obstacles Selena had to overcome to become successful in Latin America it still makes it seem as if Selena was an automatic sensation, particularly in Mexico, where it is known she had difficulty winning people over. This is evident through the one scene in the movie where Selena visits Mexico and whilst there speaks Spanglish to reporters without any repercussions as later on a newspaper calls her the “genuine artist of the people.” Yet, it is no secret that at the beginning of her career the language barrier between Selena and her Mexican audience posed an issue as she was derided for using an interpreter to communicate with the Spanish-language media (Paredez 204).…

At this time, traditional pottery techniques were being lost, but Maria and her family were trying to preserve the culture of art. By the age of seven or eight Martínez was making crude bowls and plates of her own. She received a well rounded education by first attending a government grammar and rudimentary school. Maria and her sister were selected to spend 2 of their formative years at St. Catherine’s Indian School. When Martinez returned home, she quickly achieved economic independence by mastering the craft of pueblo pottery. In 1904 she married Julian Martinez and they worked closely together. She created the pots and her husband painted them. After an archeologist had discovered ancient pottery, Maria and her husband were asked to reconstruct the pottery. After much trial and error, Maria successfully produced a black ware pot. She began developing new designs, shapes, and techniques for black pottery. She won many awards and presented her pottery at many world fairs and received the initial grant for the National Endowment for the Arts to fund a Martinez pottery workshop in 1973. Maria and her husband eventually settled in San Ildefonso, where they raised four sons and one daughter.…

In the past few years, the music industry has seen the ascension of many prolific names. Some generations producing one great name, while some generate two icons, which more often than not, are persistently compared by their respective fans, in an attempt to determine which one is better. Many female icons have been associated with one another through their whole career. The comparisons span from the likes of Madonna with Cyndi Lauper, and Diana Ross with Aretha Franklin. In this day and age, two new artists have been subjected to the same fate, Beyoncé, and Shakira.
