The big sleep
In the novel " The Big Sleep ", there's a character by the name of Philip Marlowe. Philip Marlowe is a private investigator who is hired to work for a wealthy man named General Strenwood, in the month of october. General Sternwood wants Marlowe to deal with a blackmail on his wild young daughter Carmen . Carmen is being blackmailed by a book seller named Arthur Geiger she was also previously blackmailed by Joe Brody. Carmen is clearly the femme fatal who killed her brother in law Rusty because he didn't give her the time of day. This book might be known to many but few can understand the complexity of this novel. Many characters though out this novel double -crossone another and many secrets are exposed.

Before I get started, I would like to describe what a femme fatale is according to the Merriam Webster Dictionary. A femme fatale is a very attractive women who causes trouble or unhappiness for the men who become involved with her.

"Carmen is a child who likes to pull wings off flies ," pp13. This quote gives the reader an I sightof the the type of person Carmen is. The reader can literally picture the flies as metaphors for men and she just sits there finding men to use and sobotage.General Sternwood uses this quote to describe his daughter Carmen as he explains to Marlowe the situation with both his daughters. She also fits the characteristics of a femme fatale because she is ambiguous women, yet she is an innocent child, also a cold blooded killer. She is a two faced person and one face is of a child for instance sucking her thumb. " She bit it and suck it slowly, turning it around in her mouth like a baby with a comforter" (6). In the beginning of the novel Carmen tries to sit on Marlowe's lap using her sex appeal since she knows she's pretty she then calls him cute hoping he will give in to her. " I'm cute too "(6). " There was something behind her eyes, blank as they were, that I had never seen in a women's eyes" (157). She was a cold blooded

Darkness, in Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, functions as a dynamic extension of Marlow’s altering values. Prevailing at its attempts in conveying the various phases of Marlow’s changing mindset, darkness provides a breeding ground for contention—mainly, the questioning of its inherent meaning as the plot and text unfold to form a myriad of clashing ideologies. Despite what many consider to represent solely the depths of human indecency, darkness pushes the bounds of that conclusion and takes on the many forms of greed, despondency, primitivism, and eternal damnation as Marlow’s feelings begin to conflict with standard European ideology. Marlow, perhaps the most complex character, finds himself in the middle of this debate with the eventual…

Cielo Fortin-CamachoKatrina BormanisApril 12th 2007ARTH 360 Aspects/History of PrintThe Sleep of Reason Produces MonstersThey are so subtle that people with the sharpest intelligence do no usually at first comprehend all the moral meaning of some, and those with little perspicacity need time and help to understand them -Gregorio Gonzalez Azaola, Satiras de Goya, 1811Dreams are defined as a series of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that occur involuntary in the mind during certain stages of sleep(Websters). Often they are a wild fantasy or hope and more so an abstraction of the mind. Frequently dreams are said to portray events and images that are highly unlikely to occur in physical reality. The exception to this scenario is something known as a lucid dream. In these dreams, the dreamer themselves realizes that they are indeed dreaming and are sometimes capable of changing the feel and plotline of the story their mind is producing. In lucid dreams the suspense is quickly damaged but emotions are often heightened. People can often find inspiration from dreams, whether they are goals they wish to achieve or changes in their life they long to make, in either case there is always something that can be drawn from dreams. In Goyas supposal autobiographical portrayal in his print entitled El Sueno de la Razon Produce Monstruos (translates to The Sleep [or dream] of Reason Produces Monsters), he expresses a rare yet common type of dream commonly referred to as a nightmare. Nightmares consist of the same traits and qualities of regular and more common dreams but are filled with frightening thoughts, feelings, and/or images. In this print Goya expresses his fears of the society surrounding him he feels is unwilling to change for the better (Tomlinson, 3) Goya mockingly expresses his fears by perhaps portraying the society as the demonized bats, owls and the craze eyed finx that linger and swarm behind him. Although it may seem clear to some, I feel as though Goyas…

The study explores dream recall frequency and dream content in children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. (ADHD) There have been many sleep complaints about children and adults with ADHD. The hypothesis of dreaming is that when someone is awake if reflects what they will dream about. In studies it shows that adults and children with ADHD have dreams that correlate with the daily activities going on in their life. Children with ADHD had more negative, physical aggression towards the dreamer, because the children are not aware that they have ADHD and as a reaction of their behavior they are recipients of aggression from other children. Children with ADHD also had better dream recall due to the sleep disturbances found in ADHD children. They are able to remember their dreams better because it is still fresh in their memory from waking up at night.…

In Raymond Chandler’s, The Big Sleep, he illustrates a clear tension between detectives and cops. Marlowe, an investigator is often challenged by factors not in his case such as resistance from local police. Marlowe says on many occasions that the law was corrupt. He explains how easily a “copper” could be bribed or persuaded and justice could be easily pushed to the side. In this case, he was right! The police of the city had been involved in many cases in which the facts had been hidden or slightly altered. The setting of the story is in the 1930s the same time frame as the Great Depression in America. The times were so hard, most people would do anything to self-advance. Throughout the novel, the town’s police are criticized by Marlowe for their ways. The cops are symbols of the often unjust corruption of people.…
