The Big Bang Theory: Raiders Of The Lost Ark
In one episode of the TV series The Big Bang Theory, someone ruins the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark by pointing out that the character of Dr. Indiana Jones is irrelevant to the actual story. In a similar vein, some historians make the argument that Abraham Lincoln is not critical to the Civil War and its outcome: the war happens anyway, even if Lincoln had never been born, and the North still would have won if someone other than Lincoln becomes president in 1860. That is considered to be double edge statement that I ever heard one.     Abraham Lincoln is most always associated with the Civil War. But, he was not elected through a majority of the popular vote. In fact, with only forty percent of the popular vote, he wasn 't even close to a majority. His Republican platform reached out to many groups, but left out the South. Many southerners thought he was an abolitionist, although he did favor monetary compensation and a Union.
