Many people believe that the best way for students to be taught nowadays is through year-round schooling. This idea would break off from the traditional way of having nine months of school and three months of summer. Instead, the school would have a certain number of days, which is then followed by a long break. This would last year round and there would be no big summer break. The length of the school portions and break portions would be determined by the school; some more common calendar setups include but are not limited to periods consisting of thirty days of school followed by fifteen days of break, sixty days of school with twenty days of break, or ninety days off school and thirty days of break. One of the biggest changes that would come with year round schooling would be increased use of the school building during times where it was traditionally not used at all. The most obvious time would be during the summer months. Costs for having to run the air conditioning during the summer and heating during the winter would shoot up. This would more so affect larger public schools who adopt the staggered class approach. Since the classes are staggered, when some students leave for their break, others will be returning for it. This would ensure that the school is in constant use all year round, excluding special occasions such as holidays. This would not only increase the costs for maintaining the school property with the air conditioning and heating, but it would increase the costs for school lunches. With some students always being present means there must be food everyday of the year. The money to pay for lunches, one way or another, will have to come from the parents sending their kids to school. Another way parents would be affected economically is through rising house prices. Studies show that the cost to purchase and maintain a house in a neighborhood near a good school is much higher than house costs near schools that don't produce very good students. This however, has been proven to be false, as a 2007 Ohio State University study stated that students in year-round schools do not learn more than their peers in traditional nine-month schools (Long). Schools with a year-round system often use it in an attempt to eliminate the lose of knowledge that can occur over the summer months, but this can also happen to students in year-round schools, as some have breaks that last over a month. This can be more than enough time for students to forget what they have learned. While the year-round schooling is often incorporated to help accommodate more students in schools that struggle with overcrowding, the change ends up making both teachers and parents struggle more than they would in a normal schedule. Year-round schooling would mean that the teachers would have to constantly be at work teaching a class of students, all year round, with little to no breaks.
