The Aversion Project was conducted during in Africa. This project was conducted during the apartheid era (1971-1989), an era that promotes segregations. During this experiment, the subjects were soldiers of both genders with homosexual characteristics. The goal of this experiment was to find an efficient method to change the subjects’ homosexuality. In the experiment lead by then South African Defense Force (SADF), unethical methods of experimentation were implemented. Some of these principles were violated during the Aversion Project. As stated by APTA, all physical therapists shall respect the inherent dignity and rights of all individually. The Aversion project did not follow this principle. The nature of the experiment disregarded the rights of the subjects to choose their own sexual orientations. The Aversion Project’s lack of respect for human rights was evident in their procedure of changing its’ subject sexual orientation through sex change surgery. Furthermore, APTA stated that all physical should be trustworthy and compassionate in addressing the rights and needs of patients/clients. Compassion, as one of the core value of this principle, was not demonstrated during the Aversion Project. The Aversion Project used cruel tactics, such as the electric test, to test its subjects.
