The Atrocious Shed: A Short Story
The Atrocious Shed
It was a scorching, radiant, fall day on September 10th when Tiffany and her teammates were at soccer practice. There were two goals, one on each side of the school’s 100 foot long and 60-foot wide soccer field. The school was to the left, a few hundred feet away, and a cramped shed was to the right. The wind was at her back as the starting forward, Tiffany, was swiftly dribbling on a breakaway to the other team’s goal, her long brown hair blowing behind her and her long legs were moving as fast as they could. Her arms were pumping hard when she was about ready to shoot the ball. All of the sudden, blonde hair came flying right past her on the ground as her best friend Cierra, small but mighty, came out of nowhere and slide tackled her down, kicking the ball out of bounds and knocking Tiffany down with it. The girls had gotten up laughing as Cierra asked, “Are you okay? Sorry, I was aiming for the ball.”

Tiffany looked around, seeking something she could use to get the key off the wall. She tried many different things including things that didn’t even make sense to try. Sometimes she would use a ball, which is a lousy choice to scrape something off the wall with, she found the door stopper and tried that, but the edge was way too chunky to wedge under the key. The pile of stuff off the shelves she had used kept growing as she threw all the things off the shelf onto the pile. Once the shelf was empty, she tried one last attempt to get out of the shed. She tried calling to her teammates, but as expected, it didn’t work. Se figured they would be having a water break across the field right now. Thinking she was doomed and accepting defeat, she sat

The cool fall air brought light goose bumps to my arms. Still a bit bothered by the cold, I took my long brown hair out of its usual ponytail and let it spread out across my back, warming my in the slightest. I rubbed my arms absentmindedly, looking around for Octavia. We always met here, on the metal bleachers, which rose above the green football field, waiting until the practice was over and Jake could drive us home. When I realized that she wasn’t anywhere near me, I turned my attention to the players on the field. The football team this year is supposed to be amazing, at least, from what I have been told and from what I have seen. Basically every student at Arrowsmith High School’s life revolved around football, or so it seemed. It…

It was a chilly morning as the girls showed up to the field. There was a slight breeze, the noise of trees rustling and cleats on concrete filled the player's ears. The smell of hotdogs and hamburgers filled the girl’s noses as they were walking towards the field. They had home field advantage, and everyone knew they always won when they were home. The Infield Diamonds; they were the team to beat. With Julia, their star player at first base; Emily at second base; Hailey at shortstop; Mackenzie at third base;…

I decided to advocate to the coach about my involvement in the practices as a player. As I walked into the hot and humid office of the coach, I waited until he was not as busy with his work. As the fan turned, he finally stopped what he was doing, “What’s up, Ariana?” the coach voiced. I explained my aspirations to play basketball. As I spoke, I watched his face, trying to get a sense of what he was thinking. After I stopped talking, I waited for his answer. He moved around as if it would help him figure out what to say when he knew his answer was…

I lay patiently on the cracked leather chaise longue. The modest room was a fading cream colour, books line the wall near my feet in an ornate shelf, a small desk and chair sit by the wall opposite me next to the iron door, there is a single swinging light in the middle of the room which casts a golden glow over everything and a painting of a sailing ship hangs above me.…

Suddenly, I woke to the sound of pain and stress. In the dimmed hotel room, my mother was laid roughly on the bed motioning that she didn’t feel well. We had traveled the far and exciting journey to Las Vegas to witness my mom finish a half marathon. It was an event that she had spent minutes, hours, days, and months training for. I couldn’t believe that after all of the work my mom had done in the past year, she wouldn’t be able to compete on the big day. I was wrong though when my mom sat up, tidied her tangled hair and nonchalantly said, “let’s do this”.…
