The Art of Jeepney Riding

1. What have you think about the view of the author?
I think the author just want to share his experience in riding a jeepney and at the same time how Filipino characteristics are depicts or show in jeepney riding. The author connects how the people acts when riding a jeepney and how they act in real life. One of what he mentions is about how Filipinos are opportunistic because they cover more space than they should. Mostly what he wrote was about the negative side of Filipino, like how we are just settling for less when in fact if we want we can have more than that. It also mention about our political issue and how we are just accepting the fact that the “isip-agila” which is the politicians are just treating/looking at us like their prey but we are doing nothing about it. The author is saying that the poverty that our country was experiencing was definitely our fault because of the thought that instead of expanding our resources we settled for limited resources and tend to overexploit it. We need to enlarge our resources and not just settled for less. But somehow I like what he said about the Filipinos being patience and having a good humor.

2. Do you agree with them? Why or why not?
Yes, I agree with the author because I am also aware of what was happening in our society and I can see that all the things that he was saying are real. We Filipinos are very practical, like what he said about the parts of the chicken being barbeque in which only the feather was being thrown and all other parts are cooked. It shows how we are trying everything to raise our living yet obviously nothing is changing. We should go further than just exploiting our little resources, we should think big, aim for larger opportunities and not just being contented about what we already have.

3. Can you relate to them?
Yes I can. I think most of us can relate to this because I believe that almost all Filipinos are riding a jeepney or have experience

We had brought them our pop culture, sports, foods, and many other “American” ideas. Once these ideas established the Philippines had lost some of their roots. Losing their native dialects and such is just one of the many culture specific values that had diminished. This is why the Philippines is very similar to the United States and it had not taken long for them to change, only a few decades. The Philippines can now look at this culture change as beneficial and detrimental.…

I found this book to be tear jerking, riveting, what the word needed to know and well written. I don’t believe that there is anyone who can read this book and not almost shed a tear. I know that the life style that he lead in one way or another happens to children in America, however not the same but horrible in different variations. In the book he went as far as to say “I imagined that the old drunk was going to fall flat on her face. I focused all of my attention on Mother’s face. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a blurred object fly from her hand. A sharp pain erupted from just above my stomach. I tried to remain standing, but my legs gave out, and my world turned black. As I gained consciousness, I felt a warm sensation flowing from my chest” (Pelzer, 2000, p. 87)…

The individuals on the island lack personal drive because they are being used for another purpose which is beyond them. Such aspects reflect those of a refugee camp, evidently residing in Pulau Bidong. “Was it us or was it the photographer who couldn’t make distinctions among people he didn’t know? Unable to make us human.” The refugees are evidently being photographed to serve a social/political purpose. The photographer is unable to distinguish amongst them because they are all the same. The imagery and tone illuminated in the quote also reflects a sense of alienation, and the idea of being estranged from the rest of society. The tone also emphasizes the idea of fearing the unknown. The themes of isolation and disengagement are reinforced throughout the passage. The narrator is unable to reconnect with his/her past and is slowly losing his/her recollection of it. The passage reproduces a life which lacks all meaning and personal…

It was a warm autumn day, perfect for learning how to ride my new two-wheeler. I was so excited to learn how to ride a two-wheeler that I could hardly sleep the night before. All the colors in the tiny grassy yard of my family’s petite, powder blue house were breathtaking this time of year. My heart beating so quickly, it could have beat right out of me. I waited patiently on my tire swing for my mom to come outside. My new sky blue two-wheeler covered all over with the characters from My Little Pony placed next to the tall Bignonioides. When I came outside it was about 10am. I checked my Hello Kitty watch it showed that the time was 10:40 am.…

What is the best thing here in the Philippines? Well, some says “our beaches”, while other says “our culture”, But everyone will say “our food”. Yes, there are no questions when it comes to Filipino Food. We Filipinos have a love affair with food. Filipino likes to eat is not enough because Filipino loves to eat food is the best way to describe our relationship with food. An average Filipino eats at least four times a day. After the lecture, Mr. Fabia told Mr. Santos about his farm and his family and invited him over to his house, repeatedly saying that his wife, Ruth, will be pleased to meet “a first class Filipino”. He also told him about his son, Roger, with pride. Mr. Fabia picked Mr. Santos up the next day and during the course of what seemed to be an endless journey to the distant farm, Mr. Santos became aware of Mr. Fabia’s life in the Philippines. He was a spoiled brat and the black sheep of the family. He lived in an old Visayan town where there are no apples. But there are coconut trees and roosters cooing early in the morning, and there was his family.…

He cited the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) and increase in number of TESDA graduates. I disagree with the 4ps, its teaching Pilipinos how to become lazy, there is a saying, “give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man how to fish, and you feed him for a life time.” It is more worthwhile to teach someone to do something, than to do something for them. Rather than feeding them, teach them how to earn a living, teach them how to develop into a person qualified for a job.…
