The Answer to Academic Success
The Answer to Academic Success

For many years students have been using numerous studying techniques to help them succeed in their academic careers. Almost every student in the world studies or at least tries to, but the truth is many of them do not understand the key concepts of doing it effectively. When it comes down to studying there are three important areas that everyone should practice to get better at and they are time control, classroom note taking, and textbook studying. In the process analysis essay “Power Learning” by author Sheila Akers; Akers focuses on those three ways to develop good study skills. Practicing more of time control, classroom note taking, and textbook studying will all increase the chance of academic success. Time control means organizing, planning your time, and not letting time pass by. This is a skill that contributes to success in college and with little practice it is something everyone can do. First, buying a monthly calendar is a must. On the calendar circle all-important dates and events you know you will be doing. Secondly having a weekly study schedule for the semester is another must have, as students will tend to forget things and lose track of important school dates. Next, make a daily or weekly to do list. On this list you will have to write down the things needed to do for the following day. This list will most likely tend to be the most valuable time control method you use, as it is something that will be looked at every day. If a student wants to be successful in college, the importance of classroom note taking cant be stressed enough. A few steps to follow to excel in taking more effective classroom notes are to first, attend class faithfully because someone can not substitute the experience of hearing a lecture in person that a professor lectures. Making use of abbreviations will be second because it saves time when you try and copy down a lot of useful information. Third will be to lookout for signals

As a college student, I see myself facing this issue almost all the time. Time management. It is extremely difficult knowing how to productively pass the time and get things done. When all these distractions come in the way of study time or homework, it is that much harder for someone to put all of their focus on what it is they should be doing. Because of poor time management, college students often see themselves performing poorly in the classroom. Knowing how to manage time efficiently, means knowing how to prioritize and how to have self-control.…

Think about which style of note-taking is beneficial on your behalf. Is the method as effective as it is thought to be? Today, numerous individuals often prefer to type their notes instead of to write their notes. In contrast to most people, I prefer to write my notes. For instance, when I work in history class, I choose to be one of two students that write their notes. I find that when my computer is open, the tendency to online shop, text, or play games are higher. For me, I have proven my own case that taking notes on my computer, instead of writing them, has negatively impacted my ability to retain information and perform well on tests. I think that high school and college students should write their notes instead of type their notes.…

Another key to succeeding in college classes is to always take notes. The human brain can not remember everything a professor teaches about all in one class. An essential skill that will help me succeed in college is time management. I chose this skill because it is crucial to know when a class is, when an assignment is due, what day the test is, when I have free time, and when I don’t. Mastering this skill will help me keep track of my time and ensure I get all my studies done while still having free time to do fun things. When I get to the point where I realize I don’t have time to go to the mall with everyone because I have to study for that math test, I will remind myself it is just part of the journey to my Medical Degree in Biochemistry that I will complete in the future. Note taking and note making is one of the most fundamental and important tasks that students must do. It cannot be doubted that a student that takes notes during lectures is more likely to achieve a higher grade compared to a student that does not. However, note taking might not have the positive effect the student wants if it is not done properly. “What to note down, how much to note down and how detailed the notes should be, takes time to develop” (Open University Malaysia [OUM], 2011, p. 92). Thus, this essay will focus on explaining the different methods of note making, how to take notes from printed materials and ways to develop good note taking skills during lectures. But first, an important question needs to be addressed. Why even take notes in the first place?…
