The Angel of Death There are very few people in human history that are truly pure evil incarnate. For instance, Elizabeth Bathory, Charles Manson, Jim Jones, and probably the most famous of all, Adolf Hitler are prime examples of deeply disturbing individuals with too much power in their hands. As disturbing as these individuals are, none could compare to the atrocities committed by the “Angel of Death” himself, Josef Mengele. Mengele was an SS physician, infamous for torturing camp prisoners, especially twins, at Auschwitz through horrible medical experimentation(“Josef Mengele”). Israeli jurist, Gideon Hausner, head of the Mengele tribunal, said this of the doctor, “... Josef Mengele was the symbol of Nazi cruelty and mysticism(Broder).”
He was responsible for Birkenau`s “Gypsy camp(“Josef Mengele”).” Despite popular belief, Mengele was not the highest -ranking physician in the camp. This role actually belongs to SS captain Dr. Eduard Wirths, who was responsible for any medical matters for all of Auschwitz(“Josef Mengele”). Not long after his arrival, Mengele was promoted to Chief Camp Physician of Auschwitz 11(due to the “Gypsy camp” being liquidated), in the November of 1943, but he still had to answer to Wirths(“Josef Mengele”). There were about thirty physicians serving at Auschwitz during this time, but none were as cruel as Dr. Josef
They were psychologically normal. Mengele had a wife and child that he came home to every night. He'd come home, kiss his wife and hug his child, and it would be like he didn't just torture and brutally murder innocent people in cold blood. This is the same person who one survivor related how, “ Nazi Dr. Josef Mengele ripped an infant from its mother`s womb, then hurled it into an oven because it wasn't a twin as he had hoped(Broder).” For a psychologically sane man to be capable of torturing and killing innocent people to sate his insatiable curiosity, he must be the true embodiment of evil.
