The Magna Carta limited the power of King John, because it states that “No freeman is to be taken or imprisoned or disseised of his free tenement or his liberties of free customs...” “To no-one will we sell or deny or delay right or justice”. Barbarians to Angels written by Peter Wells is an enlightening read that sheds light on to what really went on during “The Dark Ages”. The written word during 400-800 AD came from educated citizens of the Roman Empire and their recount could be judgmental. Many historians are led to believe that Barbarians destroyed Roman and everyone suffered from acts of violence, a mass migration, disease, starvation, and this was the way of life for hundreds of years. But Peter Wells goes beyond the information in the written accounts and looks at the actual archaeological evidence. He uses this information to help visualize life that went on during this period of time that will prove that the Dark Ages was anything but dark.…

It is apparent that all was not well in England in the years building up to the Magna Carta in 1215. The barons of the day, not royalty, but the upper crust of society, forced King John to sign the document because it greatly reduced the power he held as the King of England and allowed for the formation of a powerful parliament. In return, the barons took an oath of loyalty to King John under the agreement that all abide by it. The Magna Carta became the basis for English citizen's rights and it is evidence that the people of England faced many political, social, economic, and ethnic tensions with King John and his empire.…

I do not believe Europe was in a dark age. But I do believe that they were in a period of growth. For example, Document D discusses law and order. There was a new type of money and if any place refused to use the new currency they would be able to bring the case up to the king, only if they were a freeman. This document states that, "In all places, in all states, and in all markets the new denarii shall be exchanged as money and shall be received by all." After it talks about what happens if you refuse. Another example, in document A is they had rules for the king to prevent too much power. According to this document, "No man shall be forced to perform more service for a knight's fee, or other fee holding land, than is due from it. These documents support my theory that Europe was not in a dark…

The decline in education and creativity in the time period between 400 AD and 1400 AD made the dark ages dark. Even though universities were built around 1088 AD only the rich were allowed to go to them. People in europe at the time were losing their educational skills and children from poor families could not afford to put them in school. According to Document Excerpts,”Attendance at these universities was limited to a small percentage of the population” (13). This textual evidence proves that the universities that were built in the 11th century were limited to outsiders unless they were rich. This…

The most important rule in the Magna Carta in my opinion, which symbolizes the main goal of it, is rule 12, which states that no king can impose a tax with any reason or that is of no benefit to the kingdom itself. Financial responsibilities and physical implementation is the most important thing in any society, and false taxation without representation is a crime which can KILL any society. The barons in my opinion are creating this document and making the king sign it to make the place where the people reside safe and stable.…

Just because the times before and after the Middle Ages had very important events and literature doesn’t mean that the middles ages are of such lesser significance and should be referred to the dark ages.
