Lesson 1.1

One of the new understandings I made this week about a shared literacy lesson with my class is that they really enjoy poetry. Before I read the poem Covers to them, we discussed the new words and concepts. As they talked about what they already know about covers and the different types of covers there are, I found out their background knowledge. The next step was to read the poem to them. We then read it as a group. After several more choral readings of the poem, we talked about their favorite blanket. We then did a shared writing of a poem called My Blanket. The poem is now on a large chart in the classroom and is part of the material the students can and do read.

I found out that with a simple poem I could teach many literacy skills including left to right, one-to-one matching of words said to words in print, and a few sight words. I also was able to focus on the teaching of beginning letter sounds. I really think the students now have a basic understanding that the “bl” sound makes the sounds you hear at the beginning of the word “blanket.”

I also found out that my students really like to read poetry. Next time we do a shared reading of a poem and a shared writing of our own original poems, I hope to include time for them to draw a picture to go with the poem and write as much about their picture as possible. I think we can make a small class book of all their poems.

One of my students who never participated in past lessons really followed along and was engaged with reading. I will continue to do more poetry with all of the class and also individually with this

Growing up reading and writing has always been a part of my life; you could always catch my mom sitting in her chair with a book by her favorite author in her hand. I’ll always remember the day that she read a play to me, she was never into theatre as a kid but she read it as if she had been on Broadway. I think that is where my love for reading as well as theatre first started, just watching her so focused and completely into a book. It always amazed me and to this day it still does. I’ve also had some amazing teachers throughout my school years. Have you ever had those teachers who would do anything in the world for you? The teachers who just made you so excited to learn? I know that I have a few; they are the ones that you could never forget. From my English teachers to my theatre teachers, they have all made a difference in my life. I know that it sounds crazy that theatre ties in with all of this, but it does in so many ways.…

The artifact that demonstrates the type of reading program I want in my future classroom is the book “Don’t Laugh At Me” by Steve Seskin, Allen Shamblin and Glin Dibley, and the song that goes with it. This book is a great resource to create an inclusive learning environment in the classroom which is essential for any program to be successful.…

Jennifer I really enjoyed reading your post. I really like and share your idea of reading a different book to your class daily a letting it be of their choice. One thing I would add to this is asking the students before beginning the reading is, what do they think the book is about? After listening to all their ideas read to them the first two pages, again ask them and now what do you think the book is about?…

The poetry was a fun activity, for it made me use my imagination to create titles and come up with a poem that would go with it. I must say some of the poems were a lot easier to write than the others. The transformation, welcome, acrostic, bio, ode, change, list, concrete, parody, and my favorite place poem were the easiest while the rest, not so much. The narrative poem was one of the hardest to write because I had a hard time following a certain foot and meter. The hokku was difficult was difficult because a certain line had to be a certain number of syllables. Also, it was hard to put a poem into a…

Before they started reading as a group I encouraged the children to discuss what had happened so far to describe each of the characters etc. Once I was clear and felt that each of the children had participated we started reading. The first Child read.......I tried to encourage him to speak up a little so that the others within the group could hear clearly making it easier to follow. As each paragraph was completed I would quietly praise, maybe ask a question, any words the children struggled with I would encouraged to sound out and break down, in most cases the children were able to work it out in other cases the other children would offer support. As this group was of mixed ability I have found on previous observations it tends to increase patience and understanding towards each other, sometimes the more advanced children find it a little frustrating but they definitely support each other which has many benefits, helping the less advanced children become more confident with reading out loud also gaining a greater interest about the story using discussion, having a joke about the characters and discussing what may happen? How the story could end? What if they were the character in the story?......it very much brings it all to life.…

Wow I’ve learned so many things in this class. Mr. Huston has taught me many things not just about reading writing and speaking but about life. I love the way he lets us express ourselves in our journals each and everyday. Everyday when I walk into the classroom and get my journal I begin to write the quote of the day down and then to my bellwork. The quote of the day is a Quote that ties into the lesson. Our bellwork is writing about our last 23 hours. So basically you write what you have done since you left Mr. Huston's class the previous day. After bellwork Mr. Huston reads a short story out of the book Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul. Once hes done we write in our journals what we learned about the short story. Then you can share it with the class. Normally you go up to the podium and read it the way you wrote it. Everyday when I look over I see the class motto and it reminds me that if I try my best and give all my effort to stride for perfection then I will grasp excellence in the process. Mr. Huston has made my first quarter…

    Baseball Poem Analysis

Honestly, my experience with poetry has had its ups and downs. Until this unit, I had never read a really good poem. I had a less than great attitude coming into this unit. In the past grades, I dreaded anything that involved poetry. The reason I picked the poem “ Baseball “ is because, I really like how the poet, Bill Zavatsky wrote the last couple paragraphs. Also the way Zavatsky changes the tone of the poem flawlessly is astounding. So far this poetry unit has taught me how to not judge a book by it's cover. Over the last couple of years I have, this year I am hoping to change.…

    2. Ask students whether a mother or parent could be a ‘star’ to their child? You may want to model (now or after step 4) using these ideas to write a stanza of the poem, or work collaboratively as a class to write a stanza, or ask students to work in pairs to write a short stanza and share some with the class. This will help prevent all students from following the same format as the teacher model.…

    Poem Analysis Essay

The poem is about daylight saving time. Daylight Saving Time (DST) is an age-old practice where people would advance time by one hour to extend daylight time into the night. In effect, they would sacrifice sunrise time, also by one hour. People in the regions affected would adjust their clocks around the start of spring. They would change them back to normal time when summer ends. This practice has its root in early societies before the invention of the modern clock. Because most societies were agrarian at the time, and farm work was majorly dependent on daylight, people would plan their day and adjust their time according the length of daylight. Where daylight extended into the night, people would adjust their clocks to accommodate the new timeline, which, in this case, will also continue well into the night.…

Over the course of this semester, I have changed greatly as a reader. I look at books now in a different way. I used to love reading when I was younger and this semester has helped me rediscover why. When I finally got the chance to read to students for the first time I was immediately changed. I now get excited about reading books to the kids and take advantage of every opportunity I have to do so. I have, without a doubt, read more books this semester than I have since my first semester as an Early Childhood Education major.…

I despised poetry and could never understand what the author was trying to convey. But after the constant multiple choice practice we have in class, I can now confidently analyze poetry. Before taking this course, I thought poetry was not as common in today's world and because of this, I thought it was pointless analysing a “dead” style of writing. But the lesson that really connected everything for me was when we analyzed rap songs. It showed how poetry can transform and even gave me an new appreciation for rap songs. The lesson also really helped me to connect the rhythm and how the punctuation and writing style in the poem affects the overall work. My suggestion is to show this lesson earlier so that it can break the same misconceptions future students may…
