“It’s what you always wanted to accomplish. Everyone, when they are young, knows what their personal legend is.” – The King of Salem pg. 21. The King is telling Santiago what a personal legend is, it is important because Santiago needs to find his personal legend. “And when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it”- The King of Salem pg.22. The King is telling Santiago that everyone is on his side, and will help him achieve his goals. This is important because the King is telling him he will always have help, and no matter what happens. This is a confidence builder. “The secret to happiness is to see all the marvels of the world, and never to forget the drop of oil in the spoon.”- The King of Salem pg.32. This quote is important because the King is telling Santiago to enjoy his journey as an adventure, but to never forget his goal, which is to find his Personal Legend. “But this fear evaporates when we understand that our life stories and the history of the world were written by the same hand.”- The camel driver pg.76. This is important because the camel driver is telling Santiago that everything happens for a reason, nothing is random because the universe was written by one hand, so everything compliments one another. This means that everything that happens to Santiago, good or bad, brings him closer to his personal legend. “Life will be a party for you, a grand festival, because life is the moment we’re living right now.”- The camel driver pg.85. If he abandons that pursuit, it’s because it wasn’t true love…. the love that speaks the language of the world.”-The Alchemist pg.120. The alchemist tells Santiago that if he doesn’t love or understand the language of the world, it’s himself that’s keeping him from pursuing his personal legend. This shows Santiago he should never give up, because he is the only person who can hold himself back. “Listen to your heart. It knows all things, because it came from the Soul of the World, and it will one day return there.”- The Alchemist pg.127. This quote is very important because it foreshadows that the boy will need to listen to his heart later in the story to understand the Language of the World. “Don’t be impatient,” he repeated to himself. “It’s like the camel driver said: ‘Eat when it’s time to eat. And move along when it’s time to move along.’”- The Englishmen pg.89. The Englishmen is telling Santiago to slow down, and let things happen as they come. This is important, it helps him understand to go with the flow, don’t rush things. “I am part of your dream, a part of your Personal Legend, as you call it.”-Fatima pg.97. This is important because Santiago and Fatima both realize that Santiago was led to the oasis to find some of his personal Legend, which was her. He realizes that he came here for a reason. “Always heed the omens”- The King of Salem pg.100. This statement is important because it allows Santiago to understand that his vision about the hawks was an omen, and he should tell someone about it. He realizes he sees these omens for a reason, and that they are important. “The desert fills men’s hearts with visions.”- Camel driver pg.101. The camel driver statement is important because the desert fills men with fake visions and dreams, it tricks people.
