There are many reasons of why the French Revolution came about, some of these reasons were caused from the abuses of the Old Regime. The Old Regime was the social and political system of France up until 1789 CE. Under the regime, everyone was inferior to the king of France as well as any member of an estate and province. All rights and statuses derived from the social institutions, were divided into three orders. The Clergy, Nobility, and the Third Estate. There was no national citizenship before the French Revolution.
The term Old Regime is implying it is the way of the past. ”The term ‘old regime’ is often applied to countries for the traditionalism before modernization” (conservapedia.com). It was before it was modernized. Saying that it is old, means that it is from the past and it should not be done again. In French it is called the "ancien regime". It is called this because the people of France do not want to repeat this aristocratic, pro-monarchy way of living again.
One abuse of the Old Regime was that the government gave special privileges to the aristocracy, or the upper class. The lower class, the peasants, had a life of hardship. ”The peasants were acutely aware of their situation and were less and less willing to support the anachronistic and burdensome feudal system” (britannica.com). They were not willing to support the feudal system anymore because they had too many taxes and they were bound to their land. “For the most part taxes and tax collection was haphazard and confused at best.” (esuhistoryprof.com) They had to pay tithes to the nobles even though they were not fair and did not make sense, just so that the nobles could live extravagantly. Also the middle lower class, the sans culottes, faced hardship. Often times food prices rose, and their wages did not rise. They struggled to make ends meet.
