People believe that when celebrities use social media it forces upon us a false sense of intimacy and closeness that does not actually exist. Social media makes us think that the stars we love really are just like us because it appears as though these celebrities are making themselves seem like less of a “star” and more like a normal human being. Sure, we see their life on an intimate level through personal pictures and tweets that they choose to post, but in comparison to our friends, we know next to nothing about these celebrities. Celebrities have the opportunity to largely influence others and make a difference. On Twitter I follow an actress, Cassie Scerbo who is a youth ambassador for “boo2bullying” and the founder of band with me, an organization that sells wrist bands to raise money for different charities. She recently participated in the 18for18 benefiting the Somaly Mam Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to ending modern slavery and empowering its survivors as part of the solution. In most of her TV roles, Cassie plays the bully or ruthless girl. By following her on Twitter, I get a glimpse of her authenticity that isn’t portrayed in her roles as an actress. Celebrities like Cassie are doing remarkable things with their social presence by supporting great causes. For example, Amanda Bynes has established her online presence through a variety of foolish, degrading, and atrocious tweets. Amanda grew up as Nickelodeon’s sweetheart, starring in her own show. She was once considered a role model for young girls of this generation. With many teens who look up to her, the scandalous twit pics and foolish remarks that she posts are sending the wrong messages. She once tweeted, “I need to have surgery to look beautiful for the man I'm in love with so I feel comfortable with the way I look when we get married.” She clearly underestimated her social media audience when she sent out this tweet. Amanda doesn’t seem to take into consideration the fact that teen girls are following her and that she could be encouraging distasteful behavior. Amanda is a prime example of how celebrities should not be using social media
