Most of the American history serves a great deal of pride, acknowledgement, and importance to its culture. Spreading democracy and liberty all over the world yet forgetting some part of the history full of abusement, racisms, and evil. The novel, Between The World And Me, written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, who is know for expressing black culture by writing novels, talks about some of this history. In his novel, he confesses all the fears filled in black Americans’ body in a letter that he writes to his fifteen year old son. When I first learned about the history of African Americans, I was shocked and I wanted to know even more about their culture and their backgrounds since, my culture is different from theirs. I was also disguised because American history was so cruel. One of the reasons that I took this class was also to learn more about African American culture. Ta-Nehisi Coates is also African American which helps the novel show his personal feelings and opinions…

Fast forward four years and this tribute, Unbroken, has been made into a major motion picture and the remarkable story of the Olympian-turned-soldier has reached the masses. In the book Unbroken, which I read shortly after it was released, Hillenbrand chronicles Zamperini’s epic and, at times, terrifying odyssey. Raised in California, he was the son of Italian immigrants.…

Despite the fact that the two main characters Katurian and Michal has killed someone, the audience generally shows their sympathy towards them, and don't hate them much compare to the two police officers, Tupolski and Ariel. In the story, Katurian kills his parents to save his brother Michal but finally kills Michal to save him from the pains of execution. For Michal, he follows his brother's stories to kill those children. In “the war of the wall” by Toni Cade Bambara, the painter girl keeps being called “rude” even though she didn't do much to have the kids call her that. The story shows the struggles in America while also teaching not to make assumptions about people and their motives, bambaras use of irony, and a theme that makes the message of the story interesting and exciting to say the least. The biggest theme in the story is integration, it is started at the start of the story when the narrator says “big kids have been playing handball on the wall since so called integration when the crazies cross town poured cement into our pool so we couldn't use it.” This quote shows how racism impacted the children, even after integration white people still did not…

Armin Greder’s The Island is a picture book that explores the negative concepts of ‘belonging’ through instances of alienation and judgement. The text presents symbols and metaphors that can be applied to universal social issues, particularly the migrant experience. Although the tone of the text is ultimately pessimistic, there are suggestions of Christian ideals such as sharing, caring for the less fortunate and having a clear conscious. The text also not only discusses an outsider’s perspective of not belonging, but also the negative aspects of belonging to a group or community.…

The moment that Pietro met Ciro for the first time in Ciro’s shoe store was most memorable for me. All characters have already shown up, which are Pietro, Pietro’s parents and Ciro. The only girl on stage was the imaginary image of Pietro himself instead of a real person in this play. The background setting is four dolls in dress contributed to the costumes for Pietro and the girl. The interesting thing about the dolls is that two of them were females and two were males. Excluding the girl, Ciro and Pietro’s father are two males, while Pietro and his mother are considered as two females. Including the girl, Ciro and the guy who acted Pietro’s parents are two males, while the girl and Pietro would be considered as two females. The background setting reflects the main idea that Pietro was a male born with female heart. The male dolls wore girls’ dresses and jewelry reflects the behavior of Pietro that he wore beautiful dresses and jewelry like a woman. It was not surprised that audiences watched Ciro and the girls took the same actions face to face because shoes were placed symmetrically, and they have same tools hold in their hands. Shoes provided audience with the scene of a shoe store and reflects back to the goal of Pietro that he wanted to buy a new pair of sandals. When Pietro was describing how he met Ciro and fell in love with him, the girl played Pietro’s role to perform the real situation in his description. The color of the girl’s dress was pink, which indicated that a love story was going to happen. The bracelet was the key prop that connected the whole story happened in the shoe…

For our last assignment on “The Bloody Chamber” by Angela Carter, each student was given the task to choose any type of art form they wanted and interpret all the emotions, expressing ideas and abstract concepts of “The Bloody Chamber” (1993) by Angela Carter to their chosen art form. From the abounding amount of art forms to choose from, I decided to create a song that depicts the narrator’s despair throughout the story. The reason why I chose to create a song rather than other art forms is because of auditory memory Through my music and lyrics the audience will get to understand more of the emotions and references of sexual abuse I have input in my song. Through writing this song, I intend to provide the audience a glimpse of what it feels…
