David and Jennifer are living in the age of negativity. The environment is going to hell, unemployment is going to rise, life just sucks in general. This doesn’t bother Jennifer, but David wishes his life was more like his favorite 50′s TV show, Pleasantville. He’s seen every episode to the point of memorization; so when a mysterious TV repairman gives him a remote that transports him and his sister, Jennifer, into the show; he’s thrilled, but she is not. David (now Bud) tries to get Jennifer (now Mary Sue) to play the role she’s been given in the show, and follow the plot, but she decides to change things up. Now, her modern influence starts changing the way Pleasantville citizens think, as well as changing the landscape from black and white to technicolor.…
Tarantino’s first movie, Reservoir Dogs, had a lower budget than his other films at $1.5 million. The movie is about a group of professional criminals and the events that happen before and after, but not during, a diamond heist. Because of the films limited budget, the movie develops in a handful of settings. The main setting is an old, abandoned warehouse. Also Tarantino could not cast very famous actors, making the movie less appealing to the uninformed audience. However, these obstacles did not hinder his ability to captivate audiences. He still impressed critics with his drama filled story line, and its surprise twist ending.…
First of all, it is a thriller and action film. The non-stop martial arts action compiled with the conflict between the characters will keep the audience entertained and engaged. Secondly, the central plot of the relationship between the Bride and Bill, and the question of what became of their baby, will hook the audience in from the beginning and keep them hooked until the very end. The questions surrounding their relationship and the Bride’s history with his group of assassins become central right at the beginning of the film and the mystery is not completely solved until the end of the film, keeping the audience guessing the entire…
Though I squirmed more than I care to admit because CRAWLY THINGS... a part of me has to admit that I did kinda, sorta like the devil-could-care bombast of Kong: Skull Island. In some ways, it's a classic old cinematic monster movie, all gussied up for a 2017 audience. In other ways, this thing is just bonkers - a bizarre, strange-tasting goulash of 1970's war cinema with obtuse and empty rhetoric, campy acting, odd moments of humor, rather jarring violence, and actors sputtering off in all different directions.…

The remarkable stylistic conventions of classical film noir have made it one of the most memorable and recognizable film genres to this day. Each film noir picture is uniquely told though it use of degrees of darkness, contrasting lighting, rain-covered city streets, isolated protagonist, and devious dames that effortlessly lure men into a cold trap of criminal deeds. Pulp Fiction, a film by Quentin Tarantino, is said to be one of film noir’s strongest roots with its setting of a dark, criminal underworld. While the film does play around the edges of traditional film noir, it cannot be accurately be claimed a “neo-noir” due to several variances it takes with some of the most fundamental elements of film noir. Many visual and narrative devices have taken a different route in such a manner that one cannot classify it as conventional film noir.…
The first section of this speech, when the campaigner is talking, starts with an example of bias toward Boss Jim Gettys. The campaigner shows bias in favor of Kane against Jim Gettys, also. I think it also shows bias when Kane is speaking about “Jim Gettys having something less of a chance”.…
Pulp Fiction, through the course of incorporating three seemingly unrelated narratives pulled together an interwoven story that unfolded like a well-oiled machine. With each of the narratives relying on pieces of the lurid subject matter (pulp) previous to it, which aided in expressing the overall theme. The film manages to pull this off while still giving each of its narrative segments equal weight; as a result they work like interlocking gears, each one necessary to all the others. Leaving us with thematic structure and many different kinds of pulp in a humorous amoral setting. What is strange about these intermingled narratives is the order in which they are told. I hope to articulate how the fracturing of this story aided in the overall effectiveness of Pulp Fiction.…
Much like Inglorious Basterds, Django is Tarantino’s way of “correcting” history. This film is essentially a feel good story about an oppressed slave overcoming his struggles and getting revenge on his oppressors. Although the film does have aspects of love and revenge, the main theme is actually the American Dream. Django starts off as an average slave but by the end of the film, turns into the greatest gun slinger in the west, saves his wife, and lives happily ever after.…
Rhetoric is the art of persuasion using language. It is the study of principles and rules of composition formulated by critics of ancient times. Rhetoric has three main components. The first component, Logos, deals with rational appeal, facts evidence, history and science. The second component, which is Ethos, deals with ethical appeal, reliability, credibility and experience. The last component, Pathos, deals with emotional appeal, sympathy, empathy, and shared values. Stephen King uses rhetoric in his essay, Why We Crave Horror Movies, to influence his audience that we all crave horror movies because they are a passage for our aggressive desires.…
The film Kill Bill Volume 1, directed and written by Quentin Tarantino, portrays a dramatic story of the main protagonist that we only know as “The Bride” aka “Black Mamba”. Once a former member of the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, she was targeted by her former associates on her wedding day at a secluded chapel in Texas. After falling into a coma from a gunshot wound to her head, she awakens four years later to begin a long and bloody revenge steak towards the perpetrators who wronged her. Tarantino's beautiful cinematography of visual design using Mise-En-Scen of saturated colors, lighting, unique framing and camera shots enables the viewer to see the film setting as a cross over of Chinese kungfu and Japanese sword fighting in a modern day world.…
I based my movie project on the film, Pulp Fiction, by Quentin Tarantino. This film stars such names as John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, and Bruce Willis. The movie has a few different aspect that takes form thoughout the plot. One of which is about John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson's characters, who play a couple of deadly, cold hearted hit-men. Another is about an over the hill boxer, played by Bruce Willis, who scams the head boss of a mafia-like cartel for some big time money. When Bruce Willis's character rips off the head boss, and he inturn sends his thugs, played by Travolta and Jackson to take care of him. While this is all going on many other crazy things take place, which in my opinion makes this movie one of the best ever made. The movie contains many interpersonal communication concepts thoughout the story line. The three interpersonal communication concepts I chose to examine are empathy, non-verbal communication, and dramatic changes in self-concept.…
This ties in with the thriller genre of the film and it appears to do barely anything to subvert or alter this genre in any way. Through the build-up of tension and the use of big name…
Pulp Fiction was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino in 1994. Winning an Academy Award, Pulp Fiction is 20th century classic very popular amongst the generations that came after being released. Tarantino achieves humor through a well written and witty dialogue that uses classical narrative elements such as parallelism. Characters wander between the four overlapping narratives. He deliberately confuses the audience with fragmentation of the narratives which lets us create the story in our own mind giving us a sense of delight. I watched Pulp Fiction to be able to write this appreciation essay thinking it would be a lame, old movie about drug addicts and after hearing from various sources that it is a good film, I realized, no they are wrong, this is a great film that goes further than drugs and not too harsh violence. Pulp Fiction keeps viewers intrigued in a unique style. The movie is very layered, and by layered I mean each really interesting part in each scene (yes, there is one in just about every scene) doesn’t seem forced like in some movies, instead Pulp Fiction was written to come off more natural and has a seemingly charming flow for a crime movie. This film has just about everything important in a movie to hook somebody; containing quotable dialogue throughout the entire film, humor, cringing violence, intensity, intimacy, romance, action, and vulgarity, Pulp Fiction is said to be one of Tarantino’s best films for its exemplification in puzzlement and mystification. Throughout the movie there is a briefcase that ties in to all the events and each time it is opened there is a light shone upon the characters faces where they then go pale with amazement or shock, though the audience is never able to see what is inside the briefcase, only a handful of viewers will be able to put together that the light coming out of the briefcase is the lost soul. Tarantino’s technique creates a blissful…
Violence has been an immense variable in our society, regardless of what era our childhood occurred in. Violence is all over the place and it consistently has been in every generation. Constantly people find out about violence, whether it is in their neighborhood, on their televisions or even just in their local news. Regardless of the fact that if you are not a violent individual and you live in a sheltered and secure group, you are still not sheltered from violent actions. The alarming issue about violence is that everybody has the possibility to commit these violent actions. Regardless of how defensive a mother is, her kid will, ultimately, have to experience our vicious world sooner or later in their lives. Despite the fact that we live…
