The 5Q Model: The Study Of Therapeutic Communication
Therapeutic communication facilitates the nurse client relationship and fulfills the purpose of nursing as defined in the study of Stuart and Laraia (1998). Health care providers should teach, heal, validate, offer reflection and shape how patients are cared for. It is also revealed in the study of Mortazavi et al. (2009) that better understanding of patient behavior and their medical needs in general helps in increasing patient satisfaction in particular. The quality and utility of any assessment tool is only as good as the clinician’s ability to thoroughly focus on the patient. This means listening empathically, believing and legitimizing the patient’s pain, and understanding to the best of her ability and capability what the patient might be experiencing. Making an accurate pain assessment and management is what a nurse can do to help the patient view themselves as able to perform the promised service dependably.
The study of (Hussain & Rehman, 2012) revealed interesting results for patient satisfaction regarding the 5Q model of the service quality, trust and reputation. Meanwhile 5Q model was used for service quality, which composes quality of object, quality of process, quality of infrastructure, quality of interaction and quality of atmosphere. Out of five dimensions, two gave positive effect and three gave no effect result by the patient for their satisfaction from the Umeå hospital. Trust gave no effect result, whereas reputation gave positive effect result by the patient for their satisfaction from the Umeå hospital.

    In my context with the patient, it is important for me to improve the nurse-patient relationship. It has also been shown that poor communication between team members can have a negative effect on patients in ways of psychosocial experiences. This occurs when patients are confronted with information depending on the nature and quality of information that is transmitted to them and can also affects the enactment and outcome of the decision making process regarding treatment opinions (Thorne, Bultz & Baile, 2005). As a result, patients are often dissatisfied with the amount of knowledge they receive from medical professionals and they, in turn, express that this is an area requiring improvement (Conn, Lingard, Reeves, Miller, Russell & Zwarenstein, 2010). As noted above, poor communication between team members often results in negative outcomes not only for the team itself but also for the patients. Because communication plays a vital role in effective collaboration, healthcare providers must address potential breakdowns so as to ensure productive dialogue and to create troubleshooting strategies. The College of Nurses of Ontario website states that communication is how nurses establish and maintain their therapeutic relationships by building trust, empathy and receptivity (CNO, 2006).
