That Was Then, This is Now
Adam Ward
Book Report 2 Pre-AP Oklahoma History
May 3, 2013 The book I read was called That Was Then, This is now by S.E. Hinton. The book tackles issues of growing up. The main character, Bryon, will have to choose his best friends and how to deal with change. One theme of the book is that stuff will happen, and there is nothing that we can do about it. The book starts with Bryon and his best friend, Mark, at a bar, owned by their friend Charlie. Bryon and Mark are a couple of typical kids in the area. They live in the ghetto, where they get in fights, are involved in local gangs, and at this point, hustling people at pool. The pair of kids are very good at hustling. That’s how they get the majority of their money to buy soda and beer from Charlie, even though they are under-age. Next, they leave the bar to go meet their strange friend M&M. M&M is a 13 year old kid that is very mature for his age. He does things different from everyone else that he knows. M&M got his nickname from always eating M&Ms. He enjoys reading and taking care of his huge family. His parents force him to take care of his younger siblings, but he would do it anyway. While Bryon, Mark and M&M are together, M&M mentions his older sister Cathy is home. She will come back into the book later. After Bryon, Mark, and M&M leave their hangout, they get into trouble on the way home. They get into a fight. Nobody is hurt bad, but it shows the lifestyle the boys are living. Bryon and Mark were as close as brothers. They even lived in the same house. Mark’s parents killed each other when he was young, and Bryon’s mother took Mark in, as her own. Mark and Bryon grew incredibly close over years, but obviously, they had moral differences that would hurt the relationship as time went on. Mark was really into doing stuff against the law like hotwiring cars and “borrowing” them. He also accepted many things, but Bryon had a better sense of morals. When the boys were young, these issues didn’t

-Peer relationships throughout this movie seem to be the most important aspect of these teenagers lives. They are all trying to impress each other and one up each other. The teens have a lot of high risk behavior that has put them in many dangerous situations. For example, when the trend traveled to East Los Angeles in the early morning to buy marijuana from a hispanic gangster, Hector, that they did not even know. By the end of the drug deal Toby was on his knees, peeing pants, with Hector having a gun pointed to his head threatening to kill him. Allison ended up bailing Toby out of this extremely dangerous situation. This scene was a prime example of the significance of teenagers moral development, high risk behaviors,…

The Title of the book I decided to read was “That Was Then, This is Now.” Written by S.E Hinton. The characters in the story include Byron, Mark, Bryon’s mother, Charlie, Ponyboy Curtis, Angela Shepard, Cathy, and M&M (Cathy’s brother). The setting took place in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The key problem to this story is Bryon and Mark are growing apart, they started to become variance when both of them started to change. Bryon has a new interest in girls and is basically growing up and maturing. Meanwhile, Mark is a type of guy who wants to live a nonchalant life and getting away with things. Mark is not blood related to Bryon, but they still consider each other brothers since Mark moved in with them when Mark's parents shot each other because they had a quarrel and were drunk.…

That Was Then This Is Now, SE Hinton’s novel plays with two friendships. Mark and Bryon, who treat each other like brothers, evolve into total enemies. Both of their personalities drift apart and they become totally different people at the end of the story. Bryon, for instance changes drastically because he pays attention to his girlfriend, Cathy more than he does to Mark. Mark, however, feels neglected and does not get along with Cathy. As a result, Mark grows apart from Bryon and he begins dealing drugs. When Bryon finds illegal drugs under Mark’s mattress, he calls the police instantly, without thought. If Bryon had found the drugs in the beginning of this novel, he would have acted differently. I believe Mark is held responsible and guilty for how thing ended because Mark is responsible for himself, the dug drug dealing was his choice, and Bryon’s did what was best for him.…
