That Final Paper You Want From Me Analysis
In the short story “That Final Paper You Want from Me” by Polly Frost, we meet the student Sabrina McEvoy. For her Intro to Composition class, she has been asked to write a final paper. But since she does not really like the idea of a written paper, she comes up with the idea of creating a social network as a project. The Composition teacher, Dr. Pettit, rejects the whole thing, making Sabrina very angry and spiteful. She then writes him a long email, showcasing 4 different types of social media in the hopes of persuading him.
The first social media is called “Hashing it Over”. This social media is a place for girls where they can keep gossiping and talking about the same subject over and over without getting any hate for it.
The second social

This social media is for her generation. She wants a place where she and other teenagers can post as many crazy updates, without it coming back to haunt them later in their life.
The fourth and last social media is called “F2F”. Sabrina came up with this idea while talking to her grandma, since she finds her boring. “F2F” is a network for old people, where they can meet up and talk. That way, Sabrina does not have to listen to her grandmother’s complaints and gibberish all the

Dr. Pettit cares about his subject a lot. Sabrina mentions his seriousness multiple times, trying to make it seem like a horrible thing. Besides that, the only other thing Sabrina mentions about Dr. Pettit is his affair with one of his students, Caitlin. “To be honest, I can't see why you're letting Caitlin do a multimedia project and ***not*** me. It wouldn't have anything to do with the amount of time I've noticed her spending in your office, would it?” (p. 138, line 22-24)
As a narrator, Sabrina is manipulative and condescending. She cannot take “no” for an answer, which shows childlike and spoiled behavior. Sabrina has absolutely no respect of her teacher, as she is blackmailing him, “Otherwise I’ll have to create a competitor for that very successful social networking site dissyourprofessors.com and use it to talk about the way you and Caitlin swap so many charged looks in class.:-)” (p. 138, line 28-30) calling him fat and constantly talking about how boring she finds him. This does not give us the impression of a very serious student. Instead of respecting others and working hard, she is being very selfish and

Rosen also gives a brief history on how social networking has evolved—from what was, argumentatively the first of the social networking sites, the Bulletin Board System of the 1980’s, to the current and most popular network, Facebook. Rosen states that social networking was originally used to keep in touch with people who had just graduated college. However, as social networking grew and evolved, it became used for other things such as communicating with friends, meeting new people, sharing files such as music, pictures and videos, and setting up one’s identity.…

On a chilly autumn day, Calyssa Rynden stepped out of her fourth period of Lidden Middle School. The school had brick walls, and concrete pavements. It was the typical middle school. She glanced around, anxiously watching for Morgan Lyne and Felicity Walker. Morgan always jumped at every chance to insult Calyssa and make her life miserable. Felicity always smirked at her and gave Morgan more power. Calyssa peered around a corner, but there was no Morgan. She quickly walked toward the cafeteria. Maybe today she could get a seat inside. The building came into sight, and she walked faster. If she got in before Morgan and Felicity, she had a fair chance of getting a spot, even if she had to sit with other weirdos. Calyssa clutched her backpack…

In “Is Facebook Making You Mean?” an article by Lauren Tarshis, the author questions whether the negative characteristics of Facebook on children actually outweighs the positive aspects of social media. The author writes using different styles to both emphasize the important information and also to hold the interest of the intended audience. She begins by telling the story of a young girl named Anna who didn’t think through the words that she commented on another girl’s Facebook post and though not intentionally malicious, deeply hurt the receiver of those words. Tarshis immediately recognizes the opposition as she goes on to discuss the impact of those words not only in Anna’s case but also in the hundreds of similar scenarios that happen nearly every day. She then continues with the topic as she discusses both the positive and negative impact that Facebook has on the younger generation. Finally, Tarshis presents her own personal argument showing that social media can actually be extremely beneficial, especially to those who might have trouble being social in the physical world. She also recognizes the need for and…
