Thank You Ma Am, By Langston Hughes
There are many people in the world who need someone to look up to. Sadly, some people don’t have someone to learn from. In the story “Thank you Ma’am” by Langston Hughes, the main character, Roger who doesn't know the correct behavior to have, so Mrs. Jones shows him the way to act.

Throughout the beginning of the story, Roger learns that his actions can have bad consequences. His actions end up really affecting his behavior. For example, when he tries to snatch Mrs. Jones pocketbook, “Instead of taking off full blast as he had hoped, the boy fell on his back onto the sidewalk.” This is Important because when he falls, Mrs. Jones catches him and he could get into trouble. Another instance where his actions cost him is when they are at Mrs. Jones house and she talks about how she could have called the police on him! That probably scared Roger away from stealing by itself because Roger really didn't want to end up in Juvie. Another example is when Mrs. Jones puts him

One example is when he is invited into Mrs. Jones house even though he just tried to steal from her. This is important because it affects the way Roger feels and it shows him how forgiveness is important. Another important event that happens is when Mrs. Jones explains that even she once stole pocketbooks. It shows Roger that many people make mistakes but it’s important to learn from them. Another important piece of the text is when Mrs. Jones helps Roger learn to not steal from others. As a quote says “give a man a fish he eats for a day teach a man to fish he eats for life.” What this quote is saying is that if you teach someone something it will stick with that person. At this point in the text, Rogers outlook on life changes as he is shown kindness and will likely spread that kindness to others, and his behavior becomes a lot

In Lord of the Flies Roger demonstrates his own power in Chapter 4, and experiences powers pushing back against him. In the novel the narrator states “Roger led the way straight through the castles, kicking them over, burying the flowers, scattering the chosen stones” (60). Roger has lots of power to his character, the littl’uns never questioned him tearing down their castles. He walked straight through and tore everything down and scattered their rocks. In some parts of the book Roger use his power over the island in a negative way. In the beginning of the chapter “Roger gathered a handful of stones and began to throw them. Yet there was a space round Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter, into which he dares not throw” (62). Roger has power…

Civilization still has a little bit of control over Roger's mind and sanity. He seems to feel as if he is still surrounded by rules, laws, consequences and adults. Adults are the ones that make the rules and ensure they are enforced. In chapter four "Roger grabbed a handful of stones and began to throw them. Yet there was a space around Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter, into which he dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law. Roger's arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins." This symbolizes civilization…

And the conch is a magnificent symbol if you were to see it as the world of civilization as we know it. The conch calls all the meetings, it give you the power to speak, and in most cases it is a way to get respect. However it is not the most important symbol, because of the fact that it does not relay Goldings main message. And if it doesn’t wholly relay the message it can’t be that important of a symbol. A symbol should make the reader believe that its value in the story and in symbolism is pivotal and necessary to the story because without it, the story would not turn out the way it was. the only truly important symbol that would change the whole book is that of that of Roger. Roger is the amenity of all Golding’s messages, so how could one look over such an important character, almost as if his existence on the island was next to…

On the other hand, Roger never feels guilt over anything he does; or at least, he does not let his feelings be shown to the reader or any of the other characters. "High overhead, Roger, with a sense of delirious abandonment, leaned all his weight on the lever.” He felt no remorse for the wrongs he was committing. All he really cared about in the end was the death of Piggy and the inevitable rule of Jack which would soon follow, with Roger being held in high regard by Jack. He seems to hold a different, more terrifying in some ways, kind of insanity to Lady Macbeth, as he will mindlessly kill without thinking of the consequences…

Not only did Roger try to hurt Henry but he was the main cause in Simon’s death by acting like a pig and charging people making them get all excited and start to chant and rally (Golding 151). This caused the villagers to show aggression towards the so called beasts so when Simon flew into the beach the hunters and himself thought Simon was the beasts and they killed him. And this is related to devilish characteristics because Roger participated in killing Simon. Another example of Roger showing devilish actions is when the kids first killed their pig the way that he was aggressive in killing the pig showing true evil in how happy he was to kill the pig (Golding 135). But the main reason that shows that Roger is evil is that he's mean to everyone that he doesn't respect especially Piggy showing that he is verbally cruel and hateful towards them which is another reason why he is associated with the devil. The last example that proved to me that Roger portrayed actions of the devil is when him and jack stole the fire from Ralph which stealing is a sin and the devil is full of them and doesn't obey by gods morals but not only is stealing a sin but talking another persons life which Roger did by participated in killing Simon which is the worst sin of them all and it shows that he is the…

Afterwards we are able to see how even other boys are able to notice the evil characteristics Roger has picked up. They no longer feel as threatened by Jack compared to Roger, because “He’s a terror” (Golding 189). Roger becomes more prevalent towards the end of the novel since he becomes so consumed by the darkness. Roger is someone who they can perceive as psychotic, since he inflicts pain into others for his own gain. His actions can be compared to war when enemy's torture their…

Choosing to follow under the unrestricted guidance of Jack is most likely one of the most influential factors in Roger’s transformation. The sadistic nature of Roger can be clearly seen near the end of the novel, when he reveals his true colours by intentionally murdering Piggy: “High overhead, Roger, with a sense of delirious abandonment, leaned all his weight on the lever…the rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee…Piggy fell forty feet and landed on his back across that square, red rock in the sea” (222). This describes Roger’s transition to savagery as a result of following under the leadership of Jack and therefore not being kept in check through the laws and standards of society. After carrying out the murder, Roger fails to show any signs of remorse and continues to remain composed, completely unaffected by the death of Piggy. Roger demonstrates the absolute extent at which flaws can affect an individual’s behaviour and action in the absence of…

In the begging of the book the boys listen to their consciences and act according to the moral code they were taught during there time in school. They set rules, gave jobs, and elect a leader. As time goes by, boys such as the elected leader Ralph, Piggy and Simon manage to maintain their morals and stick to the conduct they were taught in their previous society, however Jack and his group of hunters start to become more and more savage and were starting to forget the morals they have learned in their life. It is also seen through Roger’s behavior early on in the story, He is throwing rocks at the littleuns, remembering the rules and punishments of his previous society, he is careful not to hit them. By the end of the book however, Roger has…

The story To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee had very good life lessons involved. These lessons were taught by Atticus Finch, the kind father in the book. He educates them on things. Understanding is an example of one of the things, when he tells Scout that you don’t know someone else’s view on something until you see it from their view. This along with many other things proves that Atticus is truly a fantastic parent. He has great perspectives on many topics. Mr. Finch does prime job of showing his two children, Scout and Jem, how to get through life in his own…

Roger is a savage, disobedient, out of control tribal. Roger’s initial build up is subtle because of his past boundaries from the old world. “Roger stooped, picked up a stone, aimed, and threw it at Henry-threw it to miss” (62). Still abiding by the rules of his former life, Roger’s civility can still be seen early in the story. Unfortunately, Roger loses control of his…

One example of the lesson is when Mrs. Dubose says racist things about Atticus and Jem cuts her flowers because of it. Atticus makes Jem pay her back by reading to her everyday until her flowers grow back. During Jem’s time reading to Mrs. Dubose, he learns why she acts the way she does and that she is actually more courageous than he originally thought. This shows that if Jem hadn’t applied this lesson, he would’ve never truly known why she was so mean and would’ve always just labeled her as a mean old lady. This also shows that Jem realizes the importance of fully understanding someone’s situation before assuming they are mean or harshly judging them. Another example of Jem applying this lesson is when Jem, Scout and Dill are trying to get in contact with Boo Radely. Atticus sees what they are doing and tells them that if Boo wanted to visit, he would invite them over. Jem, Scout, and Dill leave Boo alone after getting in trouble with Atticus. This shows that Jem realizes that if he was Boo, he probably wouldn’t want a bunch of little kids bothering him when he wants to be left alone. This also shows that Jem is starting to mature and uses the lesson to help him see that bothering Boo wasn’t doing any good and that it is immature. Fully understanding other people’s situation helped Jem see why different people in act the way they do and help him become…
