Advertisement 2 This promotion of a feminine fragrance line by Ralph Lauren is featured in a well-known woman’s health magazine. This advertisement has a sharp, clean, and uncluttered layout containing only the Ralph Lauren Romance scented glass perfume bottle and flowers on a white backdrop. This Ralph Lauren brand sponsored content is promoting its fragrance by showing pureness, cleanliness, elegance, and beauty with the application of a white background and flowers. The use of a white flower with a slightly pink hue and bright green stems provides an adequate contrast of colors that grabs your attention towards the ad. I am confident that there are other flowering plants that could offer similar or improved aesthetic qualities to illustrate the romance scent. Instead of using the relatively small subtle pinkish white flowers they could have just as effectively employed roses or orchids for the promotion.     The advertisement uses many different sizes and colors within the whole image. The top Cover Girl is in the light green color reflecting back to the idea of softness and it is the vantage point for a person’s eyes. It is very bold and automatically draws attention to the top half of the advertisement. Also, the different very black and dark bold text at the bottom of the page seems intriguing for a few reasons. First, the different font types and sizes attempt to make you really see the first three lines very clearly and get an understanding of what the product is. However, the work “new” happens to be in green followed by “natureluxe silk foundation” with “luxe” being bolded, suggesting that this product is truly “luxury touched by nature;” which is in very small print right below that as well. In addition, I find it interesting that the two black bolded lines both have the word “air” in them and also soft, air-like words, such as “fresh” and “breath.” To me this is suggesting that even though the text may be dark and bold, this product is still going to make the user feel fresh and…

    In nature, bounteous displays and vivid colors are considered ideal, especially when it comes to flowers. A great example of this is Little Bouquet in a Clay Jar by Jan Bruegel. This is an oil painting of an arrangement of flowers in a modest clay pot. The flowers are extremely voluptuous and bountiful in comparison to the small vase. The flowers take up the majority of the SPACE of the painting, displaying their importance and the ideal that nature is plentiful with beauty. The artist used COLOR in a layering effect of the flower-he used mostly blue, red, and darker yellow flowers in the back so that they can be seen threw the mostly lighter colored flowers in the forefront of the arrangement. This adds to the density and volume of the bouquet. The clay pot, wild flowers, and slugs and bugs all add to the natural and organic feel of the painting. Each flower is painted so intricately and with extreme detail despite the incredible volume of flowers. This attention to detail of each individual flower displays the artist’s appreciation and admiration of the beauty of nature and flowers in particular. This is also evident in the way the artist used LIGHT to bring to life the flowers and really capture their vividness, but yet the gold coins and jewelry in the corner is dull in comparison.     The scene of the ad takes place at night in a sky-rise apartment in some thriving metropolis. In the apartment, the drapes are for now pushed aside while a woman, perhaps in her 20s, stands straddling a man, with an indefinable age, sitting in a 60s-style chair with only his legs and forearm visible. The man holds a martini and the woman holds a drink mixer while seductively looking into the hidden face of the mystery man. The man is wearing a business suit and the woman wears the clichéd “little black dress” paired with studded black heels. Both the male and female are Caucasian. In the left foreground is the picture of the product, a Skyy Vodka bottle sitting next to a martini on a table. The main appeal to sex is made by the body language between the man and the woman, as the man’s legs are in between hers and her posture and leering facial expression scream “seductress.” Another obvious appeal to sex is the inclusion of the drapes in the upper left-hand corner, implying that they might have to be drawn a bit later. The man’s hidden face is a significant statement to his power.     Susan Bordo describes the ways men can alter an advertisement, and how the way they dress and behave in the advertisement can change the perception of them. Some advertisements that centers around men are used for the sole purpose of exuding sex appeal. Campaigns advertising products such as cologne and fashion use this approach abundantly, mainly to get people’s attention. When men are illustrated this way, it is much more controversial because men are perceived more in a feminine way. As Susan Bordo states, “It is feminine to be on display” (Bordo, 135). Males exuding femininity is not completely accepted in today’s culture because of the stereotype that men should be authoritative and burly men.     This painting by Pat Steir Figure 129 Pink Chrysanthemum is three panels of flowers. The background of these paintings is pink and the flowers are white. The first panel of the painting has three flowers in a green vase. The flowers are kind of blurry the way that the light shined on them, and are centered. The second panel has just a close up of a single flower. Its closer than the first panel and has way more detail of the flower. You almost feel like you can reach out and touch the flower sitting there. The third panel brings it even more closer than the second and it becomes even more beautiful than the other two. The atmosphere that the pinks and the shades of blue and green with the purples too makes me want to wrap up with a blanket and lay there and just look at it. Its very peaceful and pleasant to look at. To me the artist is telling everyone to take time out of their busy day and notice all the beautiful parts of nature.
