Heather Wilson was a 19 year old girl attending Fairmont Junior College. She was studying criminal justice, in hopes of someday working in a forensic lab. She was looking forward to finishing at Fairmont and moving on to a four year college. Heather made a terrible mistake on the fatal night of December 29, 2009. While texting a friend she struck a guardrail doing about sixty miles per hour, causing her car to flip and slide down into a ditch costing her, her life. Texting while driving is a senseless way for people to be injured or even killed. Just imagine living out your life feeling as thou you could have prevented a death, or even life-long injury of a friend, family member, or an innocent civilian just by setting down your phone, and focusing on driving. Thinking about it you may catch yourself repeating phrases such as “That wouldn’t happen to me” or “I can multi-task”, but when it really comes down to it no one’s life, including your own is worth a text message. Each year nearly half of a million people are critically …show more content…
If you were to die from a fatal crash, because you were texting while driving, imagine the grieving that loved ones in your life would go through. What if the day that happened you were arguing to a family member or even just a close friend, and the last thing you said to them was hateful if you were to pass just because of a text you would never get the chance to set things right, that person might even feel guilty and carry that with them throughout life. Sure the physical impact of a wreck while you were texting and driving could kill you or even severely injure you, but to even think of an emotional impact that it would have on loved ones wondering if you will be alright or if you are even going to live after your wreck would be terrible. A text can wait, because without you your family might never be the

The majority of the people in the world don’t intentionally put themselves in dangerous situations, yet tragedies occur every day. Each year a motorcycle hill climbing competition is held in New Plymouth, Idaho called the Big Nasty Hill Climb. On September 19, 2009 my sister’s best friend Lacy Fine set out for a day of fun with her cousin Brittani and her cousin’s boyfriend Carlos to watch the hyped up event. She’s never been the most cautious person because her attention span is that of someone with ADHD or a stereotypical airhead. I say this with love in my heart, because she was literally a part of my family and would never purposefully hurt someone. I can assume from knowing Lacy better than almost anyone that on that Friday she was animatedly singing loudly to the radio or retelling a funny story with voices as usual. Her focus wasn’t on the task at hand of driving and she missed a stop sign coming down a hill and crashed into another truck. None of the passengers were wearing a seatbelt. The man in the truck was uninjured and Lacy was life-flighted with severe injuries, but both of her passengers were killed instantly. The two of them had just had a baby, which added to the unbearable amount of grief that Lacy and the rest of the family faced.…

A reason why texting and driving is a serious issue is because it causes a disproportionate amount of accidents every year. In 2012, 3,328 people were killed and 421,000 were injured in distraction-affected crashes (NHTSA). It’s a shocking realization that so many lives are taken every year over something that could have been simply avoided, yet the number of accidents still continue to rise. Part of the reason that so many lives are being taken away is because driving while using a cellphone is a distraction that can inevitably hinder…

I know not to take any life-threatening risks. I understand how dangerous texting and driving is. According to Strayer, a researcher who studied distracted driver for 15 years, “a crash risk that is eight times greater than someone giving the road their undivided attention” (Strayer, “The Science behind Distracted Driving”, pg 139). Obviously, no one wants to increase their crash risky why 800%. In another source, Just/Keller said, “deterioration in driving performance that occurs when one is also processing language [such as texting]” (Just/Keller, “How the Brain Reacts”, pg 147). Additionally, I recognize how texting and driving can devastate families. In the film, “From One Second to the Next”, one of the victim’s sibling talks about how terribly the accident affected her family, “It’s heartbreaking to see my sister like this”(Elizabeth, Debbie’s sister, Herzog August 2013). I know that I’m not always responsible or cautious, but I will always be sensible and attentive when it comes to texting and driving. Because you know I would never want to hurt our family or break the hearts of anyone I love and care about, you also know that I would never text and drive. I would never ruin a family’s happiness or cause anyone pain. I would never hurt a family, I promise you this. I am also very careful when it comes to making meaningful decisions. I am mindful of what I spend my money on. I only buy what I need such as school supplies or medicine. As you also know, I am currently saving up for college. As for my health, I am in very healthful shape and I rarely get sick or injuries. I don’t do damaging drugs that negatively affect my health. I also exercise daily so I don’t run out of breath while walking up the stairs. On top of exercising, I eat my recommended amount of fruits and vegetables and never eat too much sugar than advised. Along with health and finances, I am cautious and responsible when it comes to my…

The popularity of texting has caused an unforeseen danger- texting while driving. It has been proven scientifically that texting while driving reduces your awareness by almost half, and that texting while driving is over four times more dangerous than driving under the influence of alcohol. These are very disturbing results for anyone on the road, especially since it has been proven that an estimated 65% of drivers are texting and driving every single day. There are some opponents of the new laws that punish drivers that text. Their primary argument is that texting while driving is the least of the dangers we have on the road compared to driving with under the influence of alcohol. We should continue to support the decisions that were made to ban the use of texting while driving. Such behavior has huge unintended consequences- serious injury or death of drivers and passengers but it also can lead to distractions while driving.…
