The cotton textile industry in India provides livelihood to farmers, and workers engaged in ginning, spinning, weaving, dying, designing and packaging, not leaving sewing and tailoring. It is India`s one of the most traditional and esteemed industry. More importantly, the industry strikes a rational balance between tradition and modernity. While the spinning occupation is rather centralized, weaving is exceedingly decentralized, providing scope for traditional skills of craftsmen in cotton, silk, zari, embroidery and so on. The hand spun and hand woven khadi holds back the ancient tradition of providing large scale employment. Cotton textile industry in India…

The case provides an overview of the Arvind Mills' expansion strategy, which resulted in the company's poor financial health in the late 1990s. In the mid 1990s, Arvind Mills' undertook a massive expansion of its denim capacity in spite of the fact that other cotton fabrics were slowly replacing the demand for denim. The expansion plan was funded by loans from both Indian and overseas financial institutions. With the demand for denim slowing down, Arvind Mills found it difficult to repay the loans, and thus the interest burden on the loans shot up. In the late 1990s, Arvind Mills ran into deep financial problems because of its debt burden. As a result, it incurred huge losses in the late 1990s. The case also discusses in detail the Arvind Mills debt-restructuring plan for the long-term debts being taken up in February 2001.…

Global textile & clothing industry is currently pegged at around US$ 440 bn. US and European markets dominate the global textile trade accounting for 64% of clothing and 39% of textile market. With the dismantling of quotas, global textile trade is expected to grow (as per Mc Kinsey estimates) to US$ 650 bn by 2010 (5 year CAGR of 10%). Although China is likely to become the 'supplier of choice', other low cost producers like India would also benefit as the overseas importers would try to mitigate their risk of sourcing from only one country. The two-fold increase in global textile trade is also likely to drive India's exports growth. India's textile export (at US$ 15 bn in 2005) is expected to grow to US$ 40 bn, capturing a market share of close to 8% by 2010. India, in particular, is likely to benefit from the rising demand in the home textiles and apparels segment, wherein it has competitive edge against its neighbour. Nonetheless, a rapid slowdown in the denim cycle poses risks to fabric players.…

All industries or organizations in the world are influenced by factors such as environmental, legal, technical, social, economic, and political factors, in addition to other factors including emerging globalization, competitive market conditions, labor factors, and government policies. In this case, the paper has defined the Indian textile industry’s macro-economic environment through a PESTLE analysis. Up to the point where the Indian economy was liberalized, the textile industry in the country was basically unorganized. However, the industry has now risen to being the second biggest textile industry in the world, only trailing China. It accounts for 38% of total exports in the country, which makes it a major industry in the country (Singleton, 2007: p22). The factors discussed in this paper affecting the Indian textile industry such as political factors are vital since lack of stability would adversely affect it. Since the economy of India is dependent largely on manufacture and export of textiles with 27% of its foreign exchange coming from the sector, environmental and social factors are also of great influence (Singleton, 2007: p23). Therefore, these factors have been discussed, as have the issues that affect these factors in the textile industry.…
