English 101 is a writing course meant to improve your ability to communicate through the medium of expository prose for both practical and academic purposes. Particular attention will be paid to the coherence and correctness of the writing itself, but all aspects of the writing process will be discussed. You will learn critical thinking and reading strategies useful both for personal intellectual development and for work required by more advanced college courses. Since reading and writing skills tend to complement each other, we will read and discuss a variety of texts significant in the history of Western thought and examine both their driving ideas, and their style of composition and argument.…

Ai) People communicate for many different reasons. One of the main reasons that people communicate is to understand each other. Without the ability to communicate nobody would understand what is expected of them and we wouldn’t know the needs of others. People also communicate to share their wants, needs and feelings. In order for us to adequately care for someone we need to know and understand what they expect from us and how they feel about different situations. Without communication we wouldn’t be able to have a conversation therefore wouldn’t know anybody’s likes or dislikes. We communicate to give and receive support and to express our thoughts, ideas and information. By doing all of this we also make and develop relationships through communicating.…

I believe the author of the first essay, Dinner Party Table Settings; chose the informative process because the author wanted to give step-by-step instructions on how one hosts a dinner party. This is useful because it teaches the reader in precise steps. The author could have used a space order organization method, which would have provided a more learning experience. When it came to the third essay Cochlear Implants; the author organizes the essay by topic. The author first starts off by explaining what…

When Alfie Kohn wrote his paper What Does It Mean to Be Well-Educated? he tried to focus on everyone's point of view. He wrote about how there are many different types of people who are able to hold a job with maybe just one degree against the other who may be unemployed but have multiple degrees. Why would having more initials at the end of your name guarantee your success in life? Why would his ex wife had endured 29 years of hard schooling just to end up using only one of her many degrees? There are many reasons one person may obtain multiple degrees such as a decline in the amount of people available in a position or even the necessity of that job field at all. I am in the middle of obtaining my very first degree from Liberty University and I could never imagine attending school for a total of 29 years. Everyday in my field I am learning new ways to manage my work more efficiently and control the outcome of my work. In any workplace an education is something that is held high on a pedestal simply because it means you have been to school longer but in some cases that does not mean you have a great education.…

In Anjula Razdan’s essay “What’s Love Got to Do with It” she talks about arranged marriages, love, and online dating. She was born and raised in Illinois by her parents who emigrated to American from India, although she was the product of an arranged marriage she grew up under the “spell of Western romantic love”. Growing up in the West, she is clearly going to have different views on the East tradition although she is Indian. In the West, arranged marriages are less likely to occur than in the East. I agree with Razdan when she states, “The very idea of an arranged marriage offended my ideas of love and liberty—to me, the act of choosing who to love represented the very essence of freedom. To take away that choice seemed like an attack not just on my autonomy as a person, but on democracy itself”. We should be able to choose who we love, seeing how we’re probably going to spend the rest of our lives with that person. (Razdan 523-527)…
