Dance has always been my passion. When I was undergoing some difficult problems in my life, I always turned back to dancing. For nine years I had been going to the same dance studio, Pointe & Plie, however, a couple of years ago the owner of the company had closed her dance studio and relocated to another city. I was devasted because I had grown to love the instructors and build a strong friendship with the girls there. After that I knew dance would never be the same.
It wasn’t until a couple years later, that a opportunitity opened up at my church. One of my friends, Tess, had been wanting to start a Praise & Worship Dance Team. She was barely going to start the team, and she asked me if I could help her recruit more people and make routines. I was a bit hestiate because I hadn’t danced in a while, but she convinced me that through my years of experience, I could do it. I ended up adding five more girls to the team, and were able to perform numerous of times at our church.
The dance team was doing magnificent, and with more experience, we started performing outside of our church, such as youth rallies, musicals, local events, and different churches. The girls had grown to love dance. The year was coming to an end, and we could not wait for what exciting performances and activites we could do the upcoming year. However, Tess, the captain of the dance team, was leaving to college. Some of the girls had gotten discouraged because they thought dancing was over, however, I was not going to repeat the same mistake. I took the iniative to pick the team up and continue the performances even after she left. We continued to practice, and each day we got better; we even were blessed to have more members to the dance team. And to this

There’s something about dancers I have always been in love with. I’m not quite sure what it is. Maybe it’s how dancers are so driven to perfect their technique. Or maybe it’s how they have so much passion, emotion, and character in their movements without having to say a word. Those were the thoughts going through my mind when I went to go see my first ballet. It was only a few years ago and I still can remember how excited I was before watching it, during, and after.…

I fell in love with it immediately. It was all I ever wanted to do. Dance gave a place to just be me. I made lifelong friends and learned life lessons. Dance taught me discipline, drive and focus. While I on the competitive team, my parents would remind me that school came first. During Stage 3, we experience the desire to copy the adults around us. (Erikson, 1950) My sister, Jen, is 7 years older than me. She may not have been an adult, but I looked up to her like an adult. She was in dance, so I wanted to dance too. I happened to love it more than she did and continue with longer than…

Do I regret choosing dance? Never. Despite my physical difficulties, I chose something I love, even though my body was not built for it. I have found a home and place where I can be myself in dancing. Dance is where I can relax and forget about everything for a while. Martha Graham once said, “A great dancer is not great because of their technique; they are great because of their passion.” I find this quote to be true of myself. I may not be the best dancer in the world, but what matters most is that I enjoy…

As I walked through the doors, entering the studio, I set my bag down and took a deep breath that created a moment of relief and peace. As I took my first step onto the dance floor, I knew at that moment my life was going to change and I could just feel the passion that was soon to come. Growing up I had been categorized as the quiet and shy type, afraid to try new things and that first dance class showed how truly insecure I was. After taking a month of classes I began watching videos of dancers and it left me in complete awh. I watched the ballerinas, so graceful but strong, the jazz dancers, sassy and fierce, and the lyrical dancers, full of emotion and laid back. There was something I realized while watching all the different dancers and what they all had in common and that was confidence. No matter the style each dancer was full of confidence and having the intention of not a care of what the audience thought, they danced for them. It was that moment that I knew what I needed to do not to just be a better dancer, but a better person as a whole. Each year I danced I grew more And more as a person, gaining more confidence. But during those six years I found many struggles that helped me shape who I am today. I went through always being placed in the back, never getting the lead role, and worst of all favoritism. When I look back on how much I've changed as a person, it's astonishing. I've grown into this person who is hardworking, passionate, and outgoing but, most of all I found the confidence I myself I had been seeking all these years. To think if I had never stepped foot in that dance studio who knows of the person I would have became, probably still that shy innocent girl. Without dance I would not have became the person I am and love…

It was my freshman year. I had been dancing for about three years when I was selected for our dance competition team. I felt ready. It eventually came my time to show everyone how hard I worked over the past few months. Hands shaking and heart racing, I took my first step onto that stage alone. I made it halfway through the performance before my mind went blank, forgetting my choreography. Thinking quickly, I tried to improvise the rest of my routine. Finally, the music went silent. Sitting in humility, the team gathered on the stage anticipating awards. I wasn't expecting much. Rightfully so, I placed in the lowest possible scoring bracket. I had an overwhelming feeling of failure; I wasn’t good enough. I wanted to be as skilled as the other dancers in the room. They deserved where they were, and so did I. Over the next year, I worked harder than I ever had. I took extra classes, I practiced in my bedroom mirror, I would even tondu in the grocery store. I integrated dance into every aspect of my life. I desired to be better than I was. This experience fueled…

Lately in practice, I have been thinking about how soon my dancing career will be ending. I have been dancing since I was three years old, and in a few short months it will come to a close. When I see that the ending is near, I want to give every practice all that I can. Instead of just moving through the motions, I think about how this may be one of the last times that I do a fouette or a leap. One day I will just be a mom of a dancer, wishing that I was the one out on the floor. When I realize that it's coming to an end, I feel so much love and gratitude for this sport. I have had the opportunity to dance more often on the drill team than I ever could in the studio. Although frequency was what caused burnout, I am grateful for the opportunity that I had to dance day after day with my team. I am rediscovering my lost passion for dance, and I am grateful for the person that dance has molded me into. Being on the drill team has taught me to never give up on what you set your mind on, even when times get hard, and to never lose passion for what you love.…

In 2014, I decided that I wanted to come back to Inlet for another summer. I also knew that I wanted to stay for the whole time, but sadly that wasn’t exactly an option due to certain circumstances. This was my first year with a pre-professional ballet company and I loved it. I remember circling up on the last day crying because I couldn’t stay. I loved it more than anything. Right then and there I knew next year was the year I was going to participate in the full thing.…

I enjoyed myself in an artistic manner by connecting the audience through dance. I am committed to this form of dance because it originates from my native country India. I basically taught my other team mates this form of dance and now it affects their personal character in terms of eastern dancing. My personal experience about teaching this dance was fairly enjoyable. I had an opportunity of teaching “bhangra” to my classmates too which is a form of a regional dance in India. By doing such leadership activities, I have gained an experience in organizing a group and modeling the way.…

It seemed like somewhat of a small choice to me at the time- you see, I was the type of kid who wasn’t focused on any sport for too long. On my first day I was unsure of what was to come- I walked in slowly, and during class I was busying myself with the task of learning and remembering faces and steps, trying to keep up with both simultaneously. Within a couple of weeks, I was having much more fun than I anticipated. Four years later, and I still have the same infatuation with dance that I did back then.…

Performing arts has been an integral part of my life since I was six years old. I experimented with hip hop when I lived in Korea and fully embraced hula when I moved to Hawaii. I danced in the local hula studio throughout my time in high school which taught me the power of unity. The unity I am referring to is not the simple synchronized motions of the dance but the power in bringing together of different backgrounds and beliefs to tell one story in harmony. This type of unity is beautiful and impactful.…

Being on my high school's dance team was the an experience that gave me life skills and lessons on things to do and what not to do. It was definitely not like the movies, we did not always come together at the end, and try to beat the other team in a dance battle. Yes, it got frustrating because we are trying to be one synchronized unit and would have to do thing multiple times, but that taught me to have patience. Dedicating 4 long years to this organization I also feel like I have learned to be a leader. Imagine spending over 20 hours a week with approximately 40 girls all trying to be “perfect” for a halftime performance. Friday night football games became the light at the end of tunnel that got me through long vigorous practices. There…

When I was younger my dream was to become a dancer, as the years passed by I was falling more and more in love with the idea of being able to tell a story with just some music and my body. When I was 14 I remember dancing for all the presidents of South America, I felt so proud of myself because what president would have time for a little girl with that nonsense. It was so easy to move around, along with the music, to put on facial expressions when they where needed to make it more dramatic and convincing. It was so easy for me to get their attention because I was doing something I loved and was confident of. The funny thing is that once I was up to talking one on one with the Colombian president my hands became sweaty my knees became week, my face red and my hair greasy and I am pretty sure I drove him crazy moving around from side to side.…
