Although Mr. Ford has legendary status in our society, it is interesting to know what he did, and just as interesting to know what he did not do. He did not invent the gasoline engine. He did not invent the automobile, and he did not build the first fully operational automobile. What he did do took far more genius. He recognized the potential of the automobile as the future mode of transportation, replacing of course the horse and carriage, and he also envisioned the mass production of this “horseless carriage” as a means to put it within economic reach of the average worker. In short, Henry Ford put the world on…

The cam has been an integral part of the IC engine from its invention. The cam controls the “breathing channels” of the IC engines, that is, the valves through which the fuel air mixture (in SI engines) or air (in CI engines) is supplied and exhaust driven out. Besieged by demands for better fuel economy, more power, and less pollution, motor engineers…

Engines having from 1 to 16 cylinders in in-line, flat, horizontally opposed, or V-type cylinder arrangements have appeared in production vehicles, progressing from simple single-cylinder engines at the beginning of the twentieth century to complex V-12 and V-16 engines by the early 1930s. Increased vehicle size and weight played a major role in this transition, requiring engines with additional displacement and cylinders to provide acceptable performance.…

The reciprocating engine is a highly complex engine and has hundreds of component which have to perform their function satisfactory to produce output power. There are two types of engine; spark ignition and compression ignition engine. The diesel engine works on diesel oil, a non-volatile fuel. The self-ignition temperature is comparatively low. In this case fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber at high pressure at the end of the compression stroke. Self-ignition occurs due to the high temperature of air because of the high compression. Spark plug and ignition are not necessary as in the case of spark engine. The CI engine is having a higher compression ratio, so the maximum value of the thermal efficiency can be obtained is higher. It is possible to obtain a power stroke for every revolution of crankshaft increasing the output of this engine.…
